Kia ora e te whānau, We have had plenty to celebrate this week, beginning with the results from the recent Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities.

All of our Year 10 students sit the CAAs, giving every student an early opportunity to meet the Literacy and Numeracy requirements. This makes the results particularly pleasing as they reflect the achievement of our whole cohort.

Our students achieved:

• Reading: 81%, compared with the national average of 60%
  
• Writing: 76%, compared with the national average of 57%
  
• Numeracy: 75%, compared with the national average of 52%
  
  These are very strong results. I am very proud of the students who have now met the Literacy and Numeracy requirements and of the way the whole Year 10 cohort approached the assessments. The results reflect the work of our students and the teaching and support provided by staff across the school.
  
  Literacy and Numeracy are important because students need to meet these requirements to gain their NCEA qualifications. Achieving them in Year 10 puts students in a strong position as they move into their senior years. For those who have not yet achieved a particular assessment, there will be another opportunity to sit the CAA’s later this term. Staff will continue to support these students as they prepare to have another go.
  
  It has also been great to see the range of other things happening across the school this week. Our students have had success in EPRO8 and debating, performed in our Drama evenings, and represented the school across a number of winter sports. Congratulations in particular to our Boys’ Hockey team who won their grade following a 3 – 1 victory in the final. The talent, commitment and energy of our students is phenomenal.
