Congratulations to Year 12 student Stella Raccuglia, who represented GBHS and Aotearoa New Zealand at the prestigious Internationale Deutscholympiade (IDO) in Mannheim, Germany!
Organised every two years by the Goethe-Institut, this year’s 10-day event (13–22 July) took place under the theme “DABEI SEIN! ZusammenWachsen” (“BE THERE! Growing Together”) in Germany’s UNESCO City of Music, gathering young language enthusiasts aged 14 to 17 from 66 countries.
The IDO goes far beyond traditional language exams, evaluating holistic communication, intercultural competence, and collaborative problem-solving across three proficiency levels (A2, B1, and B2).
Throughout the competition, students were challenged through dynamic speaking tasks, creative writing, and collaborative group projects where participants from different corners of the globe joined forces to build innovative presentations and performances.
Beyond the core contest, Stella took part in an action-packed schedule filled with interactive workshops, technological exploration, and rich cultural exchanges.
Highlights included designing a futuristic city in the "Fusiopolis" workshop at the TUMO Centre, testing cutting-edge 3D technology at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, and participating in immersive circus arts sessions at the Paletti Children’s and Youth Circus, which culminated in a spectacular student-led showcase.
Participants also celebrated international connection through an opening ceremony at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, guided city tours, and the fan-favourite "Countries' Evening" (Länderabend), where delegates shared the traditions, songs, and food of their home nations.
Stella’s selection and participation are fantastic testaments to her dedication, passion for the German language and culture, and outstanding communication skills.
