HEAD CARETAKER
Availability: Permanent full-time position. 40 hours per week.
Green Bay High School is a high-achieving West Auckland Secondary School in Green Bay.
About the Role:
The Head Caretaker works alongside two other caretaking staff and plays the key role in
ensuring the school grounds and buildings are a safe and inviting learning environment.
The Green Bay Campus sits on beautifully landscaped grounds and comprises a mix of
brand-new multi-level buildings and older-style single-level buildings.
This is a hands-on role that manages two direct reports.
A health and safety mindset is essential. A modern high school is a busy and constantly
changing environment. You will enjoy working with a wide variety of people and have a
helpful and "can-do" manner.
This role would suit someone from a trade, maintenance or services background. A sound
knowledge of building compliance and prior school, grounds or body corporate experience
would be well regarded.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain school buildings, grounds, and equipment to a high standard.
- Ensure school grounds are safe, clean, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.
- Carry out general repairs, maintenance, and preventative maintenance activities.
- Manage direct reports, contractors and service providers as required.
- Monitor and maintain school health and safety requirements relating to facilities and property. This includes fire control and security management.
- Assist with school property projects and upgrades.
- Manage maintenance budgets, track expenditure, and source cost-effective solutions.
- Support school events and activities when facilities assistance is required.
We’re looking for someone who is or has:
- Hands-on and gets involved. This is a physically demanding role on a relatively large campus.
- Knowledgeable in building and grounds maintenance and legal compliance.
- A strong communicator who enjoys working collaboratively with teaching staff.
- A well-organised person who can direct staff and contractors, prioritise work and manage competing demands.
- Is familiar with fire and security systems and compliance.
- Is a strong communicator.
- Can operate machinery safely (tractor, small 4 x 4 truck, ride-on mower, hand tools).
- Has a full New Zealand driver’s licence.
