The Executive of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association has directed members covered by the Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement (STCA) and the Area School Teachers' Collective Agreement (ASTCA) to attend a round of regional paid union meetings (PUM) held under the provisions of Section 26 of the Employment Relations Act 2000.

On Friday 22 November 2024, Green Bay High School teachers will attend a paid union meeting. The school day will finish at the end of period 4 (1.30pm).

Buses are not able to come at the earlier time.

REMINDER: Whānau Hui is on TONIGHT in the staffroom (21 November - 6pm - 7pm)

The focus of this hui is to welcome new whānau Māori, who are enrolled to join us in 2025.

The transition into high school can be a stressful time for rangatahi and whānau alike, and we want to support you through the process. This hui is designed to create opportunities for you to build early connections with as many members of our community as possible.

Our senior leaders, kaiako Māori, Year 9 Dean (for 2025), current whānau and student leaders will all be at the hui to introduce themselves to you. If you are available, we would love for you to join us for this informal occasion.

The hui will run from 6pm-7pm, and the plan will be very simple:
* Whakawhanaungatanga
* Kai
* Kēmu Māori (games) and raranga putiputi (weaving flowers)

Beach Ed is on today!
Classes going today (Thurs 21 Nov) are: K9HKL, M9GRT, W9DSZ

Students will apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt in their PE and Health classes and explore the beach environment with teachers and senior students. Rip spotting, lifeguard training, beach awareness and having fun in the Orewa waves are all on the agenda for this day out - with Form and PE teachers, other teachers, Senior PE students and qualified Aotearoa Surf Club instructors.

Students must wear appropriate clothing for the beach and bring togs, towel, sunblock, wetsuit (optional) and plenty of food and water.

Ooohhhh...have you seen our new all-weather outdoor Table Tennis tables?
Located to the left of the Tech pre-fabs on the D Block courtyard - they are fully installed and ready for use!

With the start of the summer weather, we are sure to see a few table tennis fanatics showing their skills at interval and lunchtime (remember to bring your own ball and bat)

Can't wait to see them in action!

A select group of GBHS Year 10 scientists are experiencing hands-on learning with Scientific Research relevant to NZ, at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch.

Students are working with Entomologist, Dr Rob Cruickshank, and Volcanologist Dr Ben Kennedy to learn about different invertebrates (what they indicate about an environment and how to catch, identify, and monitor) as well as exploring and analysing flight paths of different sized and shaped balls as models of lava bombs in a volcanic eruption.

The projects they will work on at the University of Canterbury are transferable to our local area. Students can use the research skills they learn with the Scientists to continue investigating in our rōpu.

Students will establish connections with the Scientists beyond the trip itself, to gain further understanding of research projects they may work on, or research in the future.

Spanish Literature Award: Congratulations to Poppy Edwards-Pascual (Year 13):
who won the 'Cuento' category (story) in the Spanish Literature Contest 2024 organised by Massey University and was awarded a certificate and cash prize.

All students taking Spanish at the senior level from secondary schools and universities in Aotearoa are invited to participate in this contest every year.

Students can enter into one of three categories:

• Short story
• Poem
• University level

Student Volunteer Army: National Top Volunteer and winner of SVA’s first-ever Next Steps grant!

Congratulations to Louie Miller (Year 13) who has completed an incredible 2,313 hours of volunteering in 2024.

Louie has been named as this year’s Top Volunteer out of 18,000 student volunteers across Aotearoa.

Louie is also the inaugural recipient of the $1,000 Next Steps Grant.

SVA's November newsletter states "Louie has spent the vast majority of his hours of service volunteering with Fire & Emergency New Zealand. Since being selected out of 40 candidates at a rigorous recruitment day, he has attended two trainings a week as well as regular call-outs – from ducks stuck down a drain to medical emergencies, motor incidents, and house fires. We couldn’t be prouder of him, and we can’t wait to see what he goes on to do next!"

In March earlier this year, GBHS featured an article on Louie, having completed 500 hours of volunteer work and receiving the Gold VSA award. With his latest accomplishment, that amounts to over 1800 hours of volunteer work in just 7 months. Truly amazing.

Congratulations to GBHS Level 3 Photography student, Maia Waikari, whose work 'Kainga' has been selected for Currents 2024: Te Uru Secondary Art Awards and exhibition.

Celebrating artistic talent within West Auckland high schools, each school was invited to nominate an artwork by a top Year 13 Art student, with finalist works exhibited in 'Currents 2024'.

This year’s judge is University of Auckland's Head of School at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design, Fiona Jack. The First Prize winner, funded by Lopdell Trust, is awarded $1,000 to assist the winner with furthering their art practice. All finalists also receive a $100 voucher kindly donated by Gordon Harris.

The overall winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at 2pm on 30 November 2024.

P.I.L.O.T (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) Conference:

A group of GBHS students attended the P.I.L.O.T (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) Conference, held at Massey Unversity on 6 November 2024.

We are very proud of our students, all of whom were fantastic ambassadors of GBHS, taking part in workshops and connecting with others.

Special congratulations to Akesa Vea (Yr 10) who was awarded a prize for her confidence, and her commitment. Akesa showed a true display of networking within her groups, getting to know lots of students from other schools, and was involved in all tasks wholeheartedly throughout the conference.

Connecting students and culture, empowerment and inspiration, the day was filled with inspiring speakers, engaging workshops, activities, and talanoa related to the theme of: 'Our ancestors were pilots of the ocean'.

Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) is a community-focused program created to increase the number of emerging leaders in the Pacific Island community. Workshops are tailored around identifying Year 10-13 students' natural leadership skills while focusing on helping future leaders to reach their full potential.

Huge congratulations to GBHS past pupil Sugar Rea-Bruce on graduating this week from Toi Whakaari, Aotearoa's National Drama School! 🎭🌟

The GBHS Music department has the chance to receive a $3,000 donation!

Ex-GBHS band Ulterior Motive has made it to the semi-finals of the AJ Hackett Thrash More Competition, with the winning prize including a $3,000 donation to a music programme of their choice. If Ulterior Motive were to win, they will kindly donate this money to the Green Bay High School Music Department!

The West Auckland Halberg All Abilities Sports Day is being hosted at GBHS on Monday 18 November 2024.

This fantastic event caters for approx 100 students with disabilities to experience a range of physical activities they normally don’t get to experience in their regular school term.

Green Bay High School was one of 50 schools recognised at the Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Awards ceremony, on Monday 21 October, where 16 awards were presented to celebrate their achievements in creating a business this year.

With over 700 attendees across all five regions, the event was a tremendous success, highlighting the excellence within Green Bay High School.

Kowhai & Ko from Green Bay High School won the Excellence in Innovative Thinking Award. The 'Excellence in Innovative Thinking' award recognises a business that looks at problems or situations from a fresh perspective and develops a successful business around that unique perspective.

Kowhai & Ko has created a set of playing cards featuring Aoteara's native endangered species.

Nurturing Families NZ - Children in need of a Santa this Christmas!

Former GBHS student Tayla Nasmith is running a charity called Nurturing Families NZ and has reached out to GBHS to help spread the Christmas Cheer!

This year so far, 1500 children have been nominated to receive Christmas presents. These children have been nominated by support agencies that assist those in crisis, ensuring they have the chance to celebrate Christmas this year.

To help families in need, students are encouraged to bring in unwrapped gifts, to be collected and donated to Nurturing Families NZ. Students will be awarded House points for each gift. Gifts can be dropped off in class to form teachers, or to Helen in Student Reception.

REMINDER: Whānau Hui is on TONIGHT in the staffroom (21 November - 6pm - 7pm)

The focus of this hui is to welcome new whānau Māori, who are enrolled to join us in 2025.

The transition into high school can be a stressful time for rangatahi and whānau alike, and we want to support you through the process. This hui is designed to create opportunities for you to build early connections with as many members of our community as possible.

Our senior leaders, kaiako Māori, Year 9 Dean (for 2025), current whānau and student leaders will all be at the hui to introduce themselves to you. If you are available, we would love for you to join us for this informal occasion.

The hui will run from 6pm-7pm, and the plan will be very simple:
* Whakawhanaungatanga
* Kai
* Kēmu Māori (games) and raranga putiputi (weaving flowers)

Students will apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt in their PE and Health classes and explore the beach environment with teachers and senior students. Rip spotting, lifeguard training, beach awareness and having fun in the Orewa waves are all on the agenda for this day out - with Form and PE teachers, other teachers, Senior PE students and qualified Aotearoa Surf Club instructors.

Students must wear appropriate clothing for the beach and bring togs, towel, sunblock, wetsuit (optional) and plenty of food and water.

Located to the left of the Tech pre-fabs on the D Block courtyard - they are fully installed and ready for use!

With the start of the summer weather, we are sure to see a few table tennis fanatics showing their skills at interval and lunchtime (remember to bring your own ball and bat)

Wednesday November 20th

A select group of GBHS Year 10 scientists are experiencing hands-on learning with Scientific Research relevant to NZ, at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch.

Students are working with Entomologist, Dr Rob Cruickshank, and Volcanologist Dr Ben Kennedy to learn about different invertebrates (what they indicate about an environment and how to catch, identify, and monitor) as well as exploring and analysing flight paths of different sized and shaped balls as models of lava bombs in a volcanic eruption.

The projects they will work on at the University of Canterbury are transferable to our local area. Students can use the research skills they learn with the Scientists to continue investigating in our rōpu.

Students will establish connections with the Scientists beyond the trip itself, to gain further understanding of research projects they may work on, or research in the future.

Spanish Literature Award: Congratulations to Poppy Edwards-Pascual (Year 13):
who won the 'Cuento' category (story) in the Spanish Literature Contest 2024 organised by Massey University and was awarded a certificate and cash prize.

All students taking Spanish at the senior level from secondary schools and universities in Aotearoa are invited to participate in this contest every year.

Students can enter into one of three categories:

• Short story
• Poem
• University level

Student Volunteer Army: National Top Volunteer and winner of SVA’s first-ever Next Steps grant!

Congratulations to Louie Miller (Year 13) who has completed an incredible 2,313 hours of volunteering in 2024.

Louie has been named as this year’s Top Volunteer out of 18,000 student volunteers across Aotearoa.

Louie is also the inaugural recipient of the $1,000 Next Steps Grant.

SVA's November newsletter states "Louie has spent the vast majority of his hours of service volunteering with Fire & Emergency New Zealand. Since being selected out of 40 candidates at a rigorous recruitment day, he has attended two trainings a week as well as regular call-outs – from ducks stuck down a drain to medical emergencies, motor incidents, and house fires. We couldn’t be prouder of him, and we can’t wait to see what he goes on to do next!"

In March earlier this year, GBHS featured an article on Louie, having completed 500 hours of volunteer work and receiving the Gold VSA award. With his latest accomplishment, that amounts to over 1800 hours of volunteer work in just 7 months. Truly amazing.

Tuesday November 19th

Congratulations to GBHS Level 3 Photography student, Maia Waikari, whose work 'Kainga' has been selected for Currents 2024: Te Uru Secondary Art Awards and exhibition.

Celebrating artistic talent within West Auckland high schools, each school was invited to nominate an artwork by a top Year 13 Art student, with finalist works exhibited in 'Currents 2024'.

This year’s judge is University of Auckland's Head of School at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design, Fiona Jack. The First Prize winner, funded by Lopdell Trust, is awarded $1,000 to assist the winner with furthering their art practice. All finalists also receive a $100 voucher kindly donated by Gordon Harris.

The overall winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at 2pm on 30 November 2024.

P.I.L.O.T (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) Conference:

A group of GBHS students attended the P.I.L.O.T (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) Conference, held at Massey Unversity on 6 November 2024.

We are very proud of our students, all of whom were fantastic ambassadors of GBHS, taking part in workshops and connecting with others.

Special congratulations to Akesa Vea (Yr 10) who was awarded a prize for her confidence, and her commitment. Akesa showed a true display of networking within her groups, getting to know lots of students from other schools, and was involved in all tasks wholeheartedly throughout the conference.

Connecting students and culture, empowerment and inspiration, the day was filled with inspiring speakers, engaging workshops, activities, and talanoa related to the theme of: 'Our ancestors were pilots of the ocean'.

Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) is a community-focused program created to increase the number of emerging leaders in the Pacific Island community. Workshops are tailored around identifying Year 10-13 students' natural leadership skills while focusing on helping future leaders to reach their full potential.

The GBHS Music department has the chance to receive a $3,000 donation!

Ex-GBHS band Ulterior Motive has made it to the semi-finals of the AJ Hackett Thrash More Competition, with the winning prize including a $3,000 donation to a music programme of their choice. If Ulterior Motive were to win, they will kindly donate this money to the Green Bay High School Music Department!

The West Auckland Halberg All Abilities Sports Day is being hosted at GBHS on Monday 18 November 2024.

This fantastic event caters for approx 100 students with disabilities to experience a range of physical activities they normally don’t get to experience in their regular school term.

Green Bay High School was one of 50 schools recognised at the Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Awards ceremony, on Monday 21 October, where 16 awards were presented to celebrate their achievements in creating a business this year.

With over 700 attendees across all five regions, the event was a tremendous success, highlighting the excellence within Green Bay High School.

Kowhai & Ko from Green Bay High School won the Excellence in Innovative Thinking Award. The 'Excellence in Innovative Thinking' award recognises a business that looks at problems or situations from a fresh perspective and develops a successful business around that unique perspective.

Kowhai & Ko has created a set of playing cards featuring Aoteara's native endangered species.

Nurturing Families NZ - Children in need of a Santa this Christmas!

Former GBHS student Tayla Nasmith is running a charity called Nurturing Families NZ and has reached out to GBHS to help spread the Christmas Cheer!

This year so far, 1500 children have been nominated to receive Christmas presents. These children have been nominated by support agencies that assist those in crisis, ensuring they have the chance to celebrate Christmas this year.

To help families in need, students are encouraged to bring in unwrapped gifts, to be collected and donated to Nurturing Families NZ. Students will be awarded House points for each gift. Gifts can be dropped off in class to form teachers, or to Helen in Student Reception.
