Levi Matheson (Year 12), Ethan Winson (Year 11), and Jesse Matheson (Year 10) competed in the College Sport Archery Matchplay Tournament at One Tree Hill Domain, held last weekend.

There was a great turnout with over 100 archers from schools across Auckland whose sharpshooting skills resulted in some tense matches.

"Sport isn't just about final results," says proud team manager, Nikki Matheson.

"I was so impressed seeing all three kids being friendly and sociable with so many kids from other schools."

The event started with a ranking round, with all participants shooting 5 ends of 6 arrows. Individual matchplay events shoot 2 ends of 6 arrows, and in the team event, each archer shoots 2 ends with 3 arrows.

This was Ethan's first experience trying matchplay, and shooting a recurve in the largest division. He won his 1st match but was eliminated in his 2nd match.

Levi and Jesse were shooting in both the individual and team compound events. Jesse started on a bye, won his 2nd match, and then was eliminated in the semis by the league's top compound archer. Levi also started on a bye and won their next 2 matches. The quarter-final was a close match with just a couple of points in it, but a loss to Levi put them in the bronze medal match against Lynfield College. In the bronze match, Levi secured the win.

In the compound teams event, GBHS won all their matches, putting them into the gold medal match against St Peters College. This was a close match with St Peters winning by just 2 points. A well-deserved silver to Levi and Jesse and a great finish to a very full-on summer season in Archery.

International student, Meeri Gerken (Yr 12), has created a booklet for German language visitors (as part of an assessment) to help explain the importance of Māori tikanga. Needless to say, she received an Excellence, and as an added bonus GBHS has a valuable resource to share with our agents and incoming students. Thank you Meeri!

2024 OCEANIA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Congratulations to GBHS student Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Year 12) who has been selected to compete for New Zealand in the Oceania Athletics Champs (!!) to be held in Suva, Fiji (1-8 June 2024).

Lauren will be competing in the 100m Hurdles, High Jump, and Triple Jump, as part of the NZ U18 Women's team - and is certainly one to watch -smashing yet another Personal Best with a whopping 11m.51 in the Triple Jump at the recent North Island Secondary School champs, held in Palmerston North over the weekend. Lauren also came 2nd in the Hurdles, 4th in the High Jump, and was also part of the winning Auckland team in the 4x100m Relay.

You are amazing Lauren, and we wish you all the best!

Congratulations to Amaria Williams (Year 12) who has been successful in her application to take part in the BLAKE Inspire programme, to be held in the Waikato, in July.

The BLAKE Inspire programme is a week-long residential leadership development programme run by the (Sir Peter) Blake Foundation for inspirational young leaders, in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment.

With only 35 placements available nationwide (for the July intake) Amaria is both excited and thankful to have been selected for this opportunity and is looking forward to taking part in environmental and marine science activities as well as learning about what different industries are doing to reduce their impact on the environment.

Amaria was supported in her application process by whaea Tia McIver, whaea Leanne Castle, and matua Hamish Mackay, who provided letters of recommendation, praising Amaria for her continuous effort of preserving our taiao (nature and environment) and her leadership qualities as captain of the school Premier Netball team.

"I'm looking forward to learning about different ways that I can pass on and share information with others about how we can all do our part to preserve te taiao ".

12 HOUR RELAY - doing the mahi this Saturday!

Green Bay High School is getting behind Charlotte and Bella Soland (Year 10 students) in their quest to fundraise for cancer research, as part of NZ Cancer Society's biggest fundraising event: Relay for Life - taking place tomorrow (Saturday 6 April) at AUT Millennium, Rosedale.

The GBHS team are well on track to raise awareness and support for those who are fighting their own battles - having exceeded their initial target of S1000 - thanks to the kind donations received from team members, friends, and family members (with a total of $5,317.60 at the last check-in).

Relay For Life aims to provide funds for ground-breaking cancer research, vital prevention programmes and support networks.

Held at the AUT Millennium Stadium, on Saturday 6 April 2024, the Relay for Life will see team members alternate to keep the baton in motion, for a total of 12 hours!

PRE-SEASON SPORTS EXCHANGE: GBHS v HPSS - Saturday 6/04/24

Winter sports are about to kick off, and what better way to get warmed up than with a pre-season sports exchange!

GBHS and Hobsonville Point Secondary School are having their inaugural Sports Exchange Day, this Saturday (6 April) - held at Hobsonville Point Secondary School.

Head along and show your support, plenty of action for all! Netball, Football, Basketball, Rugby League and Badminton. The first game is at 8am and the last is at 11am.

DAYLIGHT SAVING ENDS THIS WEEKEND: In Aotearoa, Daylight Saving starts each year at 2am on the last Sunday in September (Spring) and ENDS at 3am on the first Sunday in April (Autumn/Fall).

GBHS thespians are bringing Shakespeare to life in front of a live audience, this weekend, as part of the annual Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.

Following tradition, our school Shakespeare club is off to shine on stage, performing the opening scene of The Tempest. The drama department has a large group of budding actors and everyone has worked hard this term to bring it to life.

Performing Shakespeare in collaboration with other schools and students cultivates a great sense of performance community. Additionally, this opportunity develops confidence, public speaking skills, and appreciation for literature and the arts.

KAWHE & KŌRERO:
GBHS's Careers Department warmly invites students to come along to their weekly “Kawhe & Kōrero” sessions, held every Tuesday lunchtime in the Mana Tangata building.

This week's guest speaker was Animal Welfare inspector, Matt Dingle, from the SPCA who spoke to students about his role and what his work involves.

Kawhe & Kōrero has been a huge success this term with the number of students attending increasing weekly. Free hot drinks available!

During these sessions students get to meet people from different industries, and ask questions. Students will hear about a range of careers, different paths people take to get into their roles, useful experience and/or qualifications ... and the best and worst parts of their jobs.

The Lumino the Dentists Mobile Unit is scheduled to come to Green Bay High School in Term 2 (8th May through to 14th June, 2024).

The Lumino the Dentists, School Smiles Programme is fully funded by the Ministry of Health. It offers free dental examinations, oral health education, x-rays and a professional dental clean for students in year 9 to year 13, *up until their 18th birthday.

Treatment including white fillings, sealants and extractions of baby teeth are also provided on the school grounds as required. Students will be referred to their local practice or orthodontic specialist. for other treatments not completed on board the unit.

COLLEGE SPORT ARCHERY COMPETITION: 1st PLACE!
Congratulations to the following students for keeping their sights on the target during the 2024 College Sport Archery Competition, securing 1st place in the Compound Team event, and remaining undefeated in all 5 rounds!

It was a very proud moment for team manager, Nikki Matheson and avid supporter. Katherine Winson (who drove most of the students to One Tree Hill every Wednesday) at the College Sport Archery League prize-giving, held last night.

"Our school has no archery program, and our kids are competing with schools that do, with coaches coming to every event," says Nikki.

"So, in context, our Green Bay High students have done incredibly well."

Throughout the season archers competed in a round-robin format, with the total team score at the end determining placings for the match. All archers also competed in an individual competition with each archer awarded ranked points based on their weekly score. Final placings are based on total cumulative ranked points.

"Nathan did extremely well, considering he doesn't shoot at a club," says Nikki, adding "and Jackson should be proud as he had no training and was a backyard shooter."

Alexis Heckler (Year 12) is setting her sights on the horizon, and hopes to be part of a selected sailing team invited to participate in the SailGP Grand Final in San Francisco next year.

Having recently completed three days of training in Christchurch, as part of the SailGP Inspire Racing WASZP programme, Alexis enjoyed her hands-on experience sailing in a foiling Waszp in the lead-up to the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix.

Although Alexis did not see any dolphins, a highlight of the event was watching the Australian team crash in front of the grandstand!

GOING FOR GOLD:
Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Yr 12) is continuing her winning streak, securing Gold in the Auckland Secondary Schools' Athletic Championships, held at Mt Smart Stadium yesterday (Tuesday 26 March).

Lauren placed 1st in the Intermediate Girls' Triple Jump with 10m.9 and although this was not her personal best (11m.25 Triple Jump achieved at the Nationals in Wellington 16, 17 March) she was still a hop, step, jump ahead of the rest! Lauren also added two more PBs to her impressive record in the Intermediate Girls' High Jump (1m.62) and 80m Hurdles (with a time of 12sec.41).

• Isabella Haigh (Yr 12) placing 3rd in the Intermediate Girls' 300m Hurdle, and competed in the Intermediate Girls' 80m Hurdles

AUCKLAND REGIONAL DEBATING TOURNAMENT:
Emma Goldstone (Yr 10), Keya Parekh (Year 11), and Krisha Karippail (Year 11) were our Debaters taking part in the Auckland Regional Debating tournament, held over the weekend at St Cuthberts' College.

This was GBHS's first entry into the tournament and we are very proud of the team's confidence and enthusiasm. The girls enjoyed the experience and came a respectable 32nd overall out of 54 teams.

There were 4 rounds and various moots. GBHS won 2 and lost 2. Our most successful debate was to negate that people should not be able to disclose where they went to university on job applications.

GBHS Construction focuses on developing practical skills and uses Unit Standards developed and moderated by the Building Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO).

This course offers students a broad range of construction knowledge and skills. Students gain experience in planning and managing materials and tools, working on carpentry and joinery projects while completing theory work booklets to show subject knowledge.

Applicants will be notified by Friday 12th April.

This student leadership role is accessible to students from all year levels. Successful applicants must be organised, reliable and committed to making a difference within a school environment. As part of the Student Council, you will work on an impact project within your chosen area (one change project per year based on student voice). You should be able to talk to others and gain feedback from students in your year group.

GBHS's Councils are aligned to each of our school honours (Academic, Creative Arts, Cultural, School Service, Sports) comprising four Student Councillors from each year level, and led by two Student Leaders.

Last week, teams of students represented GBHS during Summer Tournament Week, (March 18 - March 24) competing against secondary school students from across the motu.

• 3x3 Regional Championships in Basketball: held at Bruce Pullman Stadium (with GBHS students playing 13 games across 3 days)
• MTB: held in Rotorua, with GBHS students competing in Enduro, Xcountry and Downhill events
• Equestrian Dressage: held in Cambridge, with Danielle Lawrence (Yr 11) placed 5th in her class
• Surfing: held at Muriwai, with the GBHS Girls' team finishing in 3rd place
• Volleyball North Island Champs: held at Wairau Park, with the GBHS Boys' team placing 9th and the GBHS Girls' team placing 16th
• Waterpolo North Island Champs, held at Sacred Heart and Dio, saw GBHS securing 13th place.

The following message is from AT Transport:

Fares for travel on AT buses, trains and ferries are changing (for under 25-year-olds) from Wednesday 01 May 2024.

Free travel for 5 to 12-year-olds and half-price travel for 13 to 24-year-olds on AT bus, train and ferry services will end on 30 April 2024, in line with the government’s decision to withdraw funding for these concessions.

This means that from Wednesday 1 May:

• 5 to 12-year-olds will no longer travel for free on weekdays and will instead pay a child concession (at least 40% off adult fares). They will continue to travel for free on weekends. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

• 13 to 15-year-olds: Half-price child fares for children ages 13 to 15 will end. Children will pay child fares (at least 40% off adult fares) from 1 May. 13 to 15-year-olds will stop receiving the half-price child fares discount and instead switch to paying full child fares (at least 40% off an adult fare during weekdays, and free travel on weekends) from 1 May. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

• 16 to 19-year-olds with a secondary student concession will stop receiving the half-price secondary fares discount and instead switch to paying full secondary fares (at least 40% off an adult fare). REMINDER - EASTER BREAK:
Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays ... but did you know Easter Tuesday is a school holiday too?

Why is that? The Easter break usually occurs during the Term 1 break meaning the Easter Tuesday (school holiday) goes un-noticed. However this year, the Easter break occurs DURING the term.

Easter Tuesday is part of the Education Act legislation.

The Ministry of Education website states: "The Tuesday following Easter Monday is a school holiday (not a statutory holiday), meaning schools must not be open."

Lucy Larnder (Year 9) competed in the New Zealand National BMX Championship in Hawkes Bay recently (15 - 17 March) securing a spot in the finals and earning the NZ4 plate.

Competing in 6 motos (races) on Saturday, Lucy gained enough points to qualify for the 14 Girls’ BMX finals, held on Sunday, where she raced hard, and with a "little bit of luck" ended up finishing in fourth place.

New Zealand National BMX Champs hosted some of New Zealand's best riders, alongside expat riders from Australia, all aiming for NZ ranking plates in each age group.

Lucy, who now holds the NZ4 plate on her bike for the rest of the year, is off to Adelaide in a couple of weeks, representing Waitakere BMX Club, to race against the Australian riders in the 14 Girls' event.

Competing at a local, national and international level takes a lot of practice with Lucy training up to three times a week - not to mention the ongoing support from her family.

"My dad pays for the competitions and bike repairs."

Lucy enjoys the thrills (not so much the spills) of combining the speed and technique of a good race and has been riding BMX since she was about 6 or 7 years old.
"It's a lot of fun!"

Cohen Faaaliga (Year 10) is an example of the whakataukī: "Tamaiti ako ana i te kāinga, tū ana ki te marae, tau ana."- A child taught at home will stand on the marae with dignity.

Cohen was one of the youngest kaihaka (performers) who stood to represent his iwi Ngāpuhi ki Tāmaki on stage at the Haka Regionals Te Tai Tokerau in Whangārei on Saturday (23rd March). The stage was his marae that day.

Ngā mihi nui and a big acknowledgement to Cohen's whānau who encourage their children to learn about their cultures.

JET SPORT NATIONALS: Tommy Cahill (Year 12) has a need for speed, some may say he even has racing blood in his genes!

Tommy is currently placed 5th in New Zealand, having raced in the Expert/Elite Runabout NA Class at the Jet Sport Nationals Summer Series, held at Lake Karapiro over the weekend (16, 17 March 2024).

With the final two rounds of the Summer Series still to be held (22, 23 April, in Taupo) Tommy is looking forward to claiming end-of-season points.

Proudly flying the Auckland Jet Sport Association flag, Tommy has been riding the waves to jet ski success for the past three years, however, this was his first year competing in the top class: Expert Elite Ski Lites, a stand-up jet ski reaching speeds of around the 75kph mark.

Stand-up jet ski races are physically taxing on the back, arms, and legs. Tommy tries to keep in ship-shape with regular gym workouts during the week, and water training every second weekend.

“Sit-down jet skis can get up to 125kph, which are faster, but less draining physically.”

So, what does Tommy enjoy most about the need for speed and getting out on the open water?

“The adrenalin rush, and bragging rights … honestly that’s about it!” he says with a chuckle.

Ngā Mahi a te Whare Pora (The House of Weaving)

GBHS's first community wānanga for 2024 took place last Saturday (16 March 2024) beginning our kaupapa with the history of raranga (weaving) followed by the tikanga (cultural practices) of harvesting and weaving harakeke/kōrari (flax) and its symbolic meaning in Aotearoa.

It was lovely to have our young people at our side learning this taonga, handed down from our tūpuna as we whiria te tangata - weave the people together.

Levi Matheson (Year 12), Ethan Winson (Year 11), and Jesse Matheson (Year 10) competed in the College Sport Archery Matchplay Tournament at One Tree Hill Domain, held last weekend.

There was a great turnout with over 100 archers from schools across Auckland whose sharpshooting skills resulted in some tense matches.

"Sport isn't just about final results," says proud team manager, Nikki Matheson.

"I was so impressed seeing all three kids being friendly and sociable with so many kids from other schools."

The event started with a ranking round, with all participants shooting 5 ends of 6 arrows. Individual matchplay events shoot 2 ends of 6 arrows, and in the team event, each archer shoots 2 ends with 3 arrows.

This was Ethan's first experience trying matchplay, and shooting a recurve in the largest division. He won his 1st match but was eliminated in his 2nd match.

Levi and Jesse were shooting in both the individual and team compound events. Jesse started on a bye, won his 2nd match, and then was eliminated in the semis by the league's top compound archer. Levi also started on a bye and won their next 2 matches. The quarter-final was a close match with just a couple of points in it, but a loss to Levi put them in the bronze medal match against Lynfield College. In the bronze match, Levi secured the win.

In the compound teams event, GBHS won all their matches, putting them into the gold medal match against St Peters College. This was a close match with St Peters winning by just 2 points. A well-deserved silver to Levi and Jesse and a great finish to a very full-on summer season in Archery.

International student, Meeri Gerken (Yr 12), has created a booklet for German language visitors (as part of an assessment) to help explain the importance of Māori tikanga. Needless to say, she received an Excellence, and as an added bonus GBHS has a valuable resource to share with our agents and incoming students. Thank you Meeri!

2024 OCEANIA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Congratulations to GBHS student Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Year 12) who has been selected to compete for New Zealand in the Oceania Athletics Champs (!!) to be held in Suva, Fiji (1-8 June 2024).

Lauren will be competing in the 100m Hurdles, High Jump, and Triple Jump, as part of the NZ U18 Women's team - and is certainly one to watch -smashing yet another Personal Best with a whopping 11m.51 in the Triple Jump at the recent North Island Secondary School champs, held in Palmerston North over the weekend. Lauren also came 2nd in the Hurdles, 4th in the High Jump, and was also part of the winning Auckland team in the 4x100m Relay.

You are amazing Lauren, and we wish you all the best!

Congratulations to Amaria Williams (Year 12) who has been successful in her application to take part in the BLAKE Inspire programme, to be held in the Waikato, in July.

The BLAKE Inspire programme is a week-long residential leadership development programme run by the (Sir Peter) Blake Foundation for inspirational young leaders, in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment.

With only 35 placements available nationwide (for the July intake) Amaria is both excited and thankful to have been selected for this opportunity and is looking forward to taking part in environmental and marine science activities as well as learning about what different industries are doing to reduce their impact on the environment.

Amaria was supported in her application process by whaea Tia McIver, whaea Leanne Castle, and matua Hamish Mackay, who provided letters of recommendation, praising Amaria for her continuous effort of preserving our taiao (nature and environment) and her leadership qualities as captain of the school Premier Netball team.

"I'm looking forward to learning about different ways that I can pass on and share information with others about how we can all do our part to preserve te taiao ".

Green Bay High School is getting behind Charlotte and Bella Soland (Year 10 students) in their quest to fundraise for cancer research, as part of NZ Cancer Society's biggest fundraising event: Relay for Life - taking place tomorrow (Saturday 6 April) at AUT Millennium, Rosedale.

The GBHS team are well on track to raise awareness and support for those who are fighting their own battles - having exceeded their initial target of S1000 - thanks to the kind donations received from team members, friends, and family members (with a total of $5,317.60 at the last check-in).

Relay For Life aims to provide funds for ground-breaking cancer research, vital prevention programmes and support networks.

Held at the AUT Millennium Stadium, on Saturday 6 April 2024, the Relay for Life will see team members alternate to keep the baton in motion, for a total of 12 hours!

GBHS thespians are bringing Shakespeare to life in front of a live audience, this weekend, as part of the annual Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.

Following tradition, our school Shakespeare club is off to shine on stage, performing the opening scene of The Tempest. The drama department has a large group of budding actors and everyone has worked hard this term to bring it to life.

Performing Shakespeare in collaboration with other schools and students cultivates a great sense of performance community. Additionally, this opportunity develops confidence, public speaking skills, and appreciation for literature and the arts.

GBHS's Careers Department warmly invites students to come along to their weekly “Kawhe & Kōrero” sessions, held every Tuesday lunchtime in the Mana Tangata building.

This week's guest speaker was Animal Welfare inspector, Matt Dingle, from the SPCA who spoke to students about his role and what his work involves.

Kawhe & Kōrero has been a huge success this term with the number of students attending increasing weekly. Free hot drinks available!

During these sessions students get to meet people from different industries, and ask questions. Students will hear about a range of careers, different paths people take to get into their roles, useful experience and/or qualifications ... and the best and worst parts of their jobs.

The Lumino the Dentists Mobile Unit is scheduled to come to Green Bay High School in Term 2 (8th May through to 14th June, 2024).

The Lumino the Dentists, School Smiles Programme is fully funded by the Ministry of Health. It offers free dental examinations, oral health education, x-rays and a professional dental clean for students in year 9 to year 13, *up until their 18th birthday.

Treatment including white fillings, sealants and extractions of baby teeth are also provided on the school grounds as required. Students will be referred to their local practice or orthodontic specialist. for other treatments not completed on board the unit.

COLLEGE SPORT ARCHERY COMPETITION: 1st PLACE!
Congratulations to the following students for keeping their sights on the target during the 2024 College Sport Archery Competition, securing 1st place in the Compound Team event, and remaining undefeated in all 5 rounds!

It was a very proud moment for team manager, Nikki Matheson and avid supporter. Katherine Winson (who drove most of the students to One Tree Hill every Wednesday) at the College Sport Archery League prize-giving, held last night.

"Our school has no archery program, and our kids are competing with schools that do, with coaches coming to every event," says Nikki.

"So, in context, our Green Bay High students have done incredibly well."

Throughout the season archers competed in a round-robin format, with the total team score at the end determining placings for the match. All archers also competed in an individual competition with each archer awarded ranked points based on their weekly score. Final placings are based on total cumulative ranked points.

Alexis Heckler (Year 12) is setting her sights on the horizon, and hopes to be part of a selected sailing team invited to participate in the SailGP Grand Final in San Francisco next year.

Having recently completed three days of training in Christchurch, as part of the SailGP Inspire Racing WASZP programme, Alexis enjoyed her hands-on experience sailing in a foiling Waszp in the lead-up to the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix.

Although Alexis did not see any dolphins, a highlight of the event was watching the Australian team crash in front of the grandstand!

GOING FOR GOLD:
Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Yr 12) is continuing her winning streak, securing Gold in the Auckland Secondary Schools' Athletic Championships, held at Mt Smart Stadium yesterday (Tuesday 26 March).

Lauren placed 1st in the Intermediate Girls' Triple Jump with 10m.9 and although this was not her personal best (11m.25 Triple Jump achieved at the Nationals in Wellington 16, 17 March) she was still a hop, step, jump ahead of the rest! Lauren also added two more PBs to her impressive record in the Intermediate Girls' High Jump (1m.62) and 80m Hurdles (with a time of 12sec.41).

AUCKLAND REGIONAL DEBATING TOURNAMENT:
Emma Goldstone (Yr 10), Keya Parekh (Year 11), and Krisha Karippail (Year 11) were our Debaters taking part in the Auckland Regional Debating tournament, held over the weekend at St Cuthberts' College.

This was GBHS's first entry into the tournament and we are very proud of the team's confidence and enthusiasm. The girls enjoyed the experience and came a respectable 32nd overall out of 54 teams.

There were 4 rounds and various moots. GBHS won 2 and lost 2. Our most successful debate was to negate that people should not be able to disclose where they went to university on job applications.

GBHS Construction focuses on developing practical skills and uses Unit Standards developed and moderated by the Building Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO).

This course offers students a broad range of construction knowledge and skills. Students gain experience in planning and managing materials and tools, working on carpentry and joinery projects while completing theory work booklets to show subject knowledge.

This student leadership role is accessible to students from all year levels. Successful applicants must be organised, reliable and committed to making a difference within a school environment. As part of the Student Council, you will work on an impact project within your chosen area (one change project per year based on student voice). You should be able to talk to others and gain feedback from students in your year group.

GBHS's Councils are aligned to each of our school honours (Academic, Creative Arts, Cultural, School Service, Sports) comprising four Student Councillors from each year level, and led by two Student Leaders.

Last week, teams of students represented GBHS during Summer Tournament Week, (March 18 - March 24) competing against secondary school students from across the motu.

• 3x3 Regional Championships in Basketball: held at Bruce Pullman Stadium (with GBHS students playing 13 games across 3 days)
• MTB: held in Rotorua, with GBHS students competing in Enduro, Xcountry and Downhill events
• Equestrian Dressage: held in Cambridge, with Danielle Lawrence (Yr 11) placed 5th in her class
• Surfing: held at Muriwai, with the GBHS Girls' team finishing in 3rd place
• Volleyball North Island Champs: held at Wairau Park, with the GBHS Boys' team placing 9th and the GBHS Girls' team placing 16th
• Waterpolo North Island Champs, held at Sacred Heart and Dio, saw GBHS securing 13th place.

We would like to acknowledge our managers, coaches, and administrators who helped to make this event possible, allowing students to shine and experience the wonderful world of school sports.

The following message is from AT Transport:

Fares for travel on AT buses, trains and ferries are changing (for under 25-year-olds) from Wednesday 01 May 2024.

Free travel for 5 to 12-year-olds and half-price travel for 13 to 24-year-olds on AT bus, train and ferry services will end on 30 April 2024, in line with the government’s decision to withdraw funding for these concessions.

This means that from Wednesday 1 May:

• 5 to 12-year-olds will no longer travel for free on weekdays and will instead pay a child concession (at least 40% off adult fares). They will continue to travel for free on weekends. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

• 13 to 15-year-olds: Half-price child fares for children ages 13 to 15 will end. Children will pay child fares (at least 40% off adult fares) from 1 May. 13 to 15-year-olds will stop receiving the half-price child fares discount and instead switch to paying full child fares (at least 40% off an adult fare during weekdays, and free travel on weekends) from 1 May. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

• 16 to 19-year-olds with a secondary student concession will stop receiving the half-price secondary fares discount and instead switch to paying full secondary fares (at least 40% off an adult fare). Students aged 16-19 should apply for the secondary student concession to ensure they are paying the cheapest fare possible.

Competing in 6 motos (races) on Saturday, Lucy gained enough points to qualify for the 14 Girls’ BMX finals, held on Sunday, where she raced hard, and with a "little bit of luck" ended up finishing in fourth place.

New Zealand National BMX Champs hosted some of New Zealand's best riders, alongside expat riders from Australia, all aiming for NZ ranking plates in each age group.

Lucy, who now holds the NZ4 plate on her bike for the rest of the year, is off to Adelaide in a couple of weeks, representing Waitakere BMX Club, to race against the Australian riders in the 14 Girls' event.

Competing at a local, national and international level takes a lot of practice with Lucy training up to three times a week - not to mention the ongoing support from her family.

"My dad pays for the competitions and bike repairs."

Lucy enjoys the thrills (not so much the spills) of combining the speed and technique of a good race and has been riding BMX since she was about 6 or 7 years old.
"It's a lot of fun!"

Monday March 25th

Cohen Faaaliga (Year 10) is an example of the whakataukī: "Tamaiti ako ana i te kāinga, tū ana ki te marae, tau ana."- A child taught at home will stand on the marae with dignity.

Cohen was one of the youngest kaihaka (performers) who stood to represent his iwi Ngāpuhi ki Tāmaki on stage at the Haka Regionals Te Tai Tokerau in Whangārei on Saturday (23rd March). The stage was his marae that day.

Ngā mihi nui and a big acknowledgement to Cohen's whānau who encourage their children to learn about their cultures.

Monday March 25th

JET SPORT NATIONALS: Tommy Cahill (Year 12) has a need for speed, some may say he even has racing blood in his genes!

Tommy is currently placed 5th in New Zealand, having raced in the Expert/Elite Runabout NA Class at the Jet Sport Nationals Summer Series, held at Lake Karapiro over the weekend (16, 17 March 2024).

With the final two rounds of the Summer Series still to be held (22, 23 April, in Taupo) Tommy is looking forward to claiming end-of-season points.

Proudly flying the Auckland Jet Sport Association flag, Tommy has been riding the waves to jet ski success for the past three years, however, this was his first year competing in the top class: Expert Elite Ski Lites, a stand-up jet ski reaching speeds of around the 75kph mark.

Stand-up jet ski races are physically taxing on the back, arms, and legs. Tommy tries to keep in ship-shape with regular gym workouts during the week, and water training every second weekend.

“Sit-down jet skis can get up to 125kph, which are faster, but less draining physically.”

So, what does Tommy enjoy most about the need for speed and getting out on the open water?

“The adrenalin rush, and bragging rights … honestly that’s about it!” he says with a chuckle.

Ngā Mahi a te Whare Pora (The House of Weaving)

GBHS's first community wānanga for 2024 took place last Saturday (16 March 2024) beginning our kaupapa with the history of raranga (weaving) followed by the tikanga (cultural practices) of harvesting and weaving harakeke/kōrari (flax) and its symbolic meaning in Aotearoa.

It was lovely to have our young people at our side learning this taonga, handed down from our tūpuna as we whiria te tangata - weave the people together.
