Green Bay High School is delighted to share the exciting news that Haelyn King (Year 12), one of our exceptionally talented students, has been awarded second place in the national Sargeson Short Story Competition!
This prestigious award is New Zealand’s largest short story competition sponsored by the University of Waikato and was established to recognise and nurture outstanding literary talent. The judge this year was Elizabeth Knox CNZM, DLitt Hons, who is the author of thirteen novels, three novellas, and a collection of essays.
Haelyn's story, called 'Double Solitaire' chronicles the complex relationship between a girl and her father. Her achievement is remarkable, not only because she is a Year 12 student, but also because the competition attracts both emerging and established writers from across the country.
To be recognised in such a field is a testament to her creativity, skill, and unique voice as a writer. Haelyn was asked to read an excerpt of her short story at the awards ceremony.
Haelyn's success places her firmly within New Zealand’s rich literary tradition and offers inspiration to other young writers in our community, showing what is possible with passion and dedication.
We are incredibly proud of Haelyn and look forward to seeing where her writing journey takes her next. Ka rawe!
