Junior cricketers complete clean sweep:
R4: GBHS 4/107 def Sacred Heart 3/106 After a round 3 bye, our Jnr Cricketers travelled to Point England to play Sacred Heart. A tight bowling display restricted the home side to 3/106, with Sakuna Karunarathna 4 overs 2/18, and Kavi Rohit in his best ever spell of 4 overs 1/12 the wicket takers. Our boys calmly went about chasing the runs, with Sakuna 28 and Jake Russell 22 the main run scorers. A big difference between the teams was the wide count, we conceded 20 runs to Sacred Hearts' 41, enabling us to win with 11 balls to spare.
R5: GBHS 3/152 def Macleans College 6/151 GBHS's Jnr Cricketers travelled to the very picturesque Macleans College ground searching for 4 wins from 4. We elected to bowl first, but despite not doing much wrong, found the opposition scoring freely at 0/56 after 6 overs. From there it took 32 overs of consistently good cricket to first stem the tide then slowly get ourselves into a position to win the game, before ripping it away from the opposition. The boys showed tremendous determination and resilience to grind their way back into the game.
Seth Hewage came on and bowled 4 overs of excellent legspin, taking 2/18 and controlling one end. Cameron Bennett 2/4, Jake Russell, 1/34 and Mac Kalksma 1/40 were our other wicket takers.
We followed up with our best opening partnership of the year, between Neth Hewage, 25 and Nathan Baillie 15, before Nathan Hill kept the score ticking over with a composed 44no from 40 balls. The innings that ripped the game from Macleans was Cameron Bennett with 34 off only 11 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes), which turned a 7 per over run chase into a comfortable win with 11 balls to spare.
Congratulations to the boys on winning 4 from 4. We will be exploring options to play a higher standard next year, which the team is clearly capable of.
Huge thanks to our team manager, Mel Bennett, scorer Elankeeran Paramasamy and umpire Rohit Ramchandra.
