AUSTRALIAN ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025
27 September to 5 October 2025 Brisbane, Queensland
Aidan Barrett-Hamilton (Year 9) competed in two international orienteering events during the term break, representing New Zealand in the Australian Schools Orienteering Champs, and as an individual entrant in the Australian Orienteering Champs - placing 6th and securing 2 Bronze medals respectively.
“I like the technical and competitive part of competitions,” says Aidan, whose fitness is maintained in fine form, with Orienteering being a year-long sport.
Taking in the sights and sounds of some of south east Queensland’s most spectacular landscapes, including running through the recent fire-scorched and ashen ground of the Wirenhoe dam to riverside trails along the iconic Brisbane River. With temperatures as high as 35 degrees, Aidan navigated the long-distance terrain complete with huge cliffs and vaguer flat areas - passing watchful kangaroos, kookaburras, snakes, and spiders - with termite mounds as distinguishing landmarks!
Determination, fitness and a knack for navigating runs in the family, with sister Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Year 13) also competing as an individual entrant, and securing 2 bronze medals in her own right.
