Y10 LEAF University of Canterbury Science Trip 2025:
A select group of GBHS Year 10 Science students are currently in Christchurch, soaking up the environment alongside two key scientists, Dr Ben Kennedy and Dr Rob Cruickshank, at the University of Canterbury.
While working with Entomologist, Dr Rob Cruickshank, students will learn about different invertebrates, what they indicate about an environment and how to catch, identify and monitor them.
Volcanologist, Dr Ben Kennedy, will have students collecting data on the flight path of lava bomb models (using balls of different weights and sizes) during a volcanic eruption demonstration. Students will also learn about different types of volcanoes, volcanic hazard maps and paving the way to work with him on future research projects, including interactive teaching tools.
This trip will establish GBHS as a member of the wider network of educational institutes involved with the LEAF project. The Learning For Earth Ako Futures (LEAF) represents a group of transdisciplinary researchers at the University of Canterbury and beyond, interested in creating opportunities for accessible, flexible, and future-focused education.
