Kia ora e te whānau,

What a fantastic week it has been. The Dance Showcase on Wednesday evening featuring dance students from Years 11-13, showed the depth of creative talent in our school. Both the choreography and the professionalism of the students on stage was amazing, but what I really loved was the obvious passion and enjoyment on the faces of our students. Dance Teacher Emily Woodall leaves at the end of the year, and we’re grateful for the huge contribution she has made to dance at GBHS over the past few years.

Last night was the annual Sports Awards Evening, a celebration of the great achievements of 2022 - the first full calendar year of sport since 2019. I am so impressed with the level of talent and achievement of our elite athletes and the commitment of all students who participated in different sporting codes this year. I want to acknowledge the contribution of our staff and the whānau and friends of GBHS who continue to coach and manage teams - our students would not have as many amazing opportunities without their support. Thank you to Director of Sport Hamish Mackay for the great year of sport and to our sports administrators Georgia Spears and Molly Lawrey for the work that went into making such a successful evening.

GBHS was one of two schools who were invited this week to work with Netsafe and Creative HQ to develop new interactive, ‘micro learning moments’ which are focused on online safety and will be used in schools across the country. Four Year 10 students - Carter Ward, Cayla Andrews, Noah Saunders and Jessica Finch - went to the day-long workshop where they presented ideas and perspectives on topics such as online wellbeing, understanding your digital footprint and digital privacy and security. Our students were supported by Health and PE teacher Anna Jolly and Bethany Oram 24/7 youth worker. I am really proud of the way our students and staff contributed to this important work.

Have a great weekend.
