Winter Tournament Week 2026

GBHS Basketball From Saturday 29 August to Monday 31 August, our U19 Basketball Boys' team competed at the NZSS Basketball Northern Cup, held at Franklin Pool and Leisure Centre, and Pukekohe High School in Auckland.
A big kudos to the Yr 12 and Yr 13 students who played two full-on games before scrubbing up to attend the School Ball on Saturday, and were up bright and early the next day for a 9.45am game on Sunday morning!
After finishing their pool games with two wins and two losses, they played off for 9th-12th Place on Monday. Two consecutive wins in their semis and finals put them in 9th Place overall. An outstanding effort from the team!

Equestrian From Sunday 30 August to Thursday 3 September, Piper Cooney (Yr 9), Madi Johnson (Yr 9), Mila Laing (Yr 9) and Katie O'Connor (Yr 10) represented GBHS at the North Island Secondary Schools' Equestrian Championships, held at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupō. The girls had an amazing run in their selected events, gaining a meaningful and competitive experience. With such a young team, we can expect to see these girls in action for years to come, and hope to grow the team/sport to be strong contenders in next year's tournament. The team also had a Green Bay High School tree planted as part of the 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 NZ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 initiative. Such a great incentive to promote rider safety!

Road Race On Thursday 3 September, 12 students represented GBHS at the Road Race Festival, held in Hamilton. Congratulations to our Senior Mixed Team: Finn Birch (Yr 12), Henry Klimetz (Yr 11), Sofia Maulvurfs (Yr 11) and Isobel Beaumont (Yr 11), who took home a 2nd-place finish in their grade, a superb result! Congratulations to our Junior Mixed Team: Elijah McDermott (Yr 9), Connor Bush (Yr 10), Tsubaki Moore (Yr 10) and Marina Zheng (Yr 10), who came away with a 3rd-place finish in their grade! Brian Pham (Yr 13), Louis Tran (Yr 13), Amian Gaillard (Yr 10) and Laken Cooney (Yr 11) also had great runs on the course. Such a successful event for GBHS; many thanks to Kris, Giles and Heather for making it all possible!

Netball From Monday 31 August to Friday 4 September, GBHS's Premier Netball Team competed at the Upper North Island Secondary Schools' (UNISS) Netball Tournament at the Hamilton City Netball Centre. After the first round of games, the team finished second in their pool and progressed to the Top 16 of the grade (this is the first time GBHS has reached the Top 16 of C Grade at UNISS)! The next round of pool games proved challenging, with the highlight being a 32-29 win against Bay of Islands College (who went on to win the whole C Grade Competition). Our Girls narrowly missed out on progressing to the Top 8 but brushed it off and were determined to finish as high as possible in 9th Place. And they did just that! With five consecutive wins and convincing scorelines in the semis and finals, the Girls proved they were Top 8 material and took home a 9th-place finish in C Grade. This sets us up nicely for the 2027 tournament, where we aim to finish in the Top 5 and move up to B Grade!

Boys' Football From Monday 31 August to Friday 4 September, GBHS's 1st XI Boys' Football team competed at the NZSS Trident Tournament, held at Ray Boord/Westbrook Parks in Rotorua. With a loss, a draw and a win in their first round, they were sitting third on the table and had just missed out on progressing to the Top 16. Across their last four games in the play-off rounds, our team won three and lost one in the defining quarter-finals, placing 21st overall after finishing on a high with a clean sweep in their semis and finals. Special shout-out to Yr 10 student, Jimmy Williams, who not only scored a hat-trick but also scored the most goals for the team throughout the week! As we say farewell to our Yr 13s, who have been such valued members of the squad for many seasons, GBHS can expect the team to remain strong in the coming years, with a lot of younger players climbing up in the ranks.

Girls' Football From Monday 31 August to Friday 4 September, GBHS's 1st XI Girls' Football team competed at the NZSS Grant Jarvis Tournament, held at Gower Park in Hamilton. It was clear to see why this team had earned their spot in the AKL Premier Grade next year, winning all eight of their games across the week! GBHS was a force to be reckoned with in their pool games, with the Girls coming away with scores as high as 10-0, setting them up nicely for play-offs. In their quarter-finals, they won 4-0 against Woodford House, then went on to a 3-0 win against Feilding High School in their semis. Going Head-to-head against Macleans College in the finals, with scores all tied up at half-time, it came down to Keira Mulrooney (Yr 11) scoring two magnificent goals to pull ahead with a 4-2 win and bringing home the Grant Jarvis trophy! We couldn't have asked for a better result. Congratulations to the team and to coach Leo!

Fencing GBHS wins NZSS Fencing National Title! NZ Fencing Secondary Schools' Competition was held in Te Pai, Henderson. We are very pleased to congratulate our GBHS boys' team, who took home gold in the Team Epee with all three team members fencing strongly for a 45-42 victory. Team members: Matias Ureta, Alex Menzies and Yuki Yamada. This is the first time that the Green Bay High School boys' Epee team have won the National title. Earlier in the week, all three also competed in the individual competition. Matias finished 10th, Yuki 18th and Alex 28th out of 37 fencers. Yuki also competed in the foil individual event on Saturday, achieving 7th out of 37 fencers. Special thanks to coach Mary Black, whose vital guidance has grown the sport and given this team the proud opportunity to represent their school.

Rugby Green Bay High School's U60s are the 6B Rugby Champions for 2026! The hard work and training put in over the year were on display last Saturday, during a very wet and muddy morning, as GBHS played against Macleans in the finals. The match was a hard-fought game, and while GBHS had a commanding 17-3 lead at half-time, thanks to some brilliant offensive and territorial play, Macleans came out firing in the second half to make it a tight encounter. A monumental defensive effort in the second half saw GBHS repel phase after phase from Macleans on our goal line. Big tackles at big times win matches - final score: 17-16 to Green Bay High School! Thank you to everyone who came to support the team, not just at the final but throughout the whole year. It is an amazing feeling to bring home some rugby silverware!
