Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 14-20 o Hepetema - Te Wiki o te Reo Māori runs from Monday 14 September to Sunday 20 September 2026.
With our senior students going on study leave next week (for DGEs) GBHS already has several events taking place to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, so everyone can 'karawhiua' take part and give it their all!
An energetic game of Kī-o-rahi (a traditional, fast-paced Māori ball game) took place at lunchtime on Tuesday - complete with reo cheers from the sidelines!
What's on?
- Rāhina / Monday: classroom resource packs distributed
- Rātū / Tuesday: Kī-o-rahi
- Rāapa / Wednesday: The Lion King - Reo Māori Version in the Auditorium
- Rāpare / Thursday: Create tukutuku panels in the library
- Rāmere / Friday: Kapa Haka performance; Parāoa Parai (Māori fried bread)
- Rāhoroi / Saturday: Whānau Day at Te Pou Theatre (Corban Estate)
- Rātapu / Sunday: Kapa haka performance by Te Tūhononga ki Rāwhiti at The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
- Ongoing Events throughout the next two weeks: Challenge the librarians to a game of Mū Tōrere; and Mahi Toi (arts) competition: All entries need to be returned to the Library by Thursday 17th September. Winners will be announced on Friday 18th September.
Next week will see a daily Bingo challenge, recognition of awards, and community weekend events such as Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Te Wai o Horotiu Art Hīkoi, a walking tour highlighting significant Māori artworks in the Tāmaki Makaurau city centre, and Ngā Taonga Tūturu, the Treasured Māori Portraits exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, or Māori Language Week, is a government-sponsored initiative to encourage the use of the Māori language in New Zealand.
