Fukuoka Friendship Garden Spring Working Bee
Fukuoka (one of Auckland’s sister cities) gifted a Japanese garden to our city. It is located on the corner of the Auckland Zoo car park, as you are walking into Western Springs.
The Fukuoka Garden’s Spring Working Bee took place last weekend (Sunday, 7 September) with a small group of volunteers, including GBHS Year 11 student Seita Hanada, a GBHS parent Vanessa, and GBHS teacher Ms. Bee Tankard, who were joined by the Japanese Consul General Mr. Matsui for the morning.
The garden was weeded, any plants that had been planted in the last Working Bee received new compost, and morning tea was a ‘hanami picnic’ under the cherry trees.
A group of volunteers meet every season for a working bee, and anyone is welcome. It is a fantastic opportunity for students (and others) to practice using Japanese, and to have a mini Japanese experience right here in NZ.
UPCOMING EVENT: Summer Working Bee 🌸Saturday, 6 December 2025, with a rain date of 7 December. 🌸9am-12 noon. 🌸Bring: Something for a shared morning tea, appropriate shoes, gardening gloves, water, and any gardening tools if you have them. 🌸No gardening experience is needed - many hands make light work
For more details, contact Ms. Tankard in D8, or follow The Fukuoka Garden on Facebook.
