Sports Round-Up (Week 1 Term 3)
Tuesday, 15th July 2025 at 7:32am
Term 3 has commenced along with the continuation of our winter sport season.
Upcoming this weekend, our First XI Football Boys take on Long Bay on Friday at 4pm over on the North Shore, while our other Football teams and our Junior Netball girls resume their season on Saturday morning. Rugby will be back in action the following weekend.
Over the break, while some were sleeping in and enjoying a nice rest, some students were waking up early to compete in a variety of events such as cycling, orienteering and netball.
Our Junior Netball girls had a couple of games during the holidays with a range of wins and losses. It wasn't easy with a lot of people heading out of town from both teams therefore opposition and defaults were inevitable, but our coaches did well to organise their teams despite the uncertainties.
One of our Year 11 students, Tom Ross, competed two Cycling NZ events over the break. The first was the North Island School Road Champs in Karapiro, and the second was the National School Track Championships down at the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge. Unfortunately, during the Road Champs, Tom got caught up in a crash towards the start of the race but was determined to carry on and managed to clock another 30km. Such great perseverance! Tom came 8th place in the 250m Track Champs which was a great effort as well.
It was a sea of GBHS green on the orienteering podium last weekend! The Orienteering Sprint Race, which took place in the last weekend of the holidays, saw horrible weather (especially Friday) but outstanding results. Aidan Barrett-Hamilton (Yr 9) came in 1st place with Cormac Gray (Yr 9) following close behind to come in at 2nd place in their grade. Lauren Barrett-Hamilton (Yr 13) made her return to the sport after her injury and came away with 9th place, really impressive stuff. On Saturday, the Long-Distance Race commenced. In the Junior Boys' Championship Grade, Aidan came 3rd and Cormac came 5th. In the Junior Boys' Standard Grade, Fox Winton (Yr 9) came 1st and Amian Gaillard (Yr 9) came 3rd. On the last day of the Championships (Sunday), Aidan, Cormac and Reuben Edlington (Yr 9) came 2nd overall in the Junior Boys' Relay; and Year 9 students Jessica Radley, Fran Ishida, Tsubaki Moore came 3rd overall in the Junior Girls' Relay.
On Tuesday, some of our Year 9, 10 and 11 Football players joined forces to compete in the quarter-finals of the U15 Boys Knockout Cup against Waitakere. The team fought through a tough game and came out strong in the second half, but unfortunately, will not progress to the semi-finals.
Senior Netball is back up and running despite the unfavourable weather once again this week. Our Prem Girls' team suffered a tight loss against Hobsonville, but our Senior A Girls' team fought for a tight win against Kaipara College. Our Year 13 Girls' Social team will be on a high this week after winning their first game of the season!
Girls' Football had a great run on Wednesday evening; with our lst XI Girls' team winning 5-1 against the MAGS 2nd XI, and our 2nd XI Girls' team won 5-2 against MAGS 4th XI!
Our Basketball Boys' teams played on Wednesday night and our Senior Development team played against Waiōrea here at GBHS with home games. Results from Wednesday night are still to be confirmed.
