Grit and Determination

Thursday, 31st July 2025 at 8:18am

We had some highs and lows last weekend across Football, Netball and Rugby. Most of our Football Boys teams had some tough losses, but a great 6-0 win for our Year 13 Boys and 9-1 win for our 14 Development Boys. All Junior Netball teams had awesome wins on Saturday, a clean sweep for our girls! Both rugby teams had narrow losses against MAGS and Glendowie, however, both teams are still in the running for a top place finish as we near the end of the season.

GBHS grit and determination paid off, and to update last week's basketball scores, we had some great wins from the Boys' Senior Open team, Boys' Senior Development team and Boys' Junior Blue team.

Our Hockey Girls drew with Henderson, 1-1, on Thursday afternoon.

Four of our students competed in the NZ Secondary Schools Swim Champs from Thursday to Sunday last week. Isaac Gear competed in the 17/18 yr age group and narrowly missed a podium finish, sometimes by milliseconds, but took home a 4th place finish in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle (personal best), 50m Fly and 100m Fly. He also placed 5th in the 100m Individual Medley (personal best). Aidan Barrett-Hamilton competed in the 13 yr age group and took home a 5th place in the 50m Back, 12th place in the 50m Freestyle and 13th place in the 200m Freestyle. Our other two swimmers, Henry Klimetz and Sheehan Peris had Personal Bests in close to all events they had competed in. Awesome results for all the swimmers at a national level!

GHBS had another successful run for our Fencers on Sunday. Travis West-Hill, James MacDonald, Matias Ureta and Braden Clemmett competed in the Fencing North Secondary Schools' Competition held at Te Pai Centre in Henderson. Travis took home a 2nd place finish after a hard bout with an Italian exchange student, such a huge achievement! James finished in 5th, Matias in 8th, and Braden in 18th. We look forward to seeing their craft again in the upcoming Secondary Schools' Championships and National Championships next month.

Due to the terrible weather on Tuesday, our Senior Netball games have been postponed to Friday evening.

GBHS 1st XI Girls' Football played an important game on Wednesday against top of the table team, One Tree Hill and worked so hard to come away with a 1-0 win, bringing them one step closer to promotion into a higher grade!

Our U70 Rugby team played a catch-up game against Saint Kentigern's on Wednesday and had a great crowd there to support. They played an awesome game with some stunning tries, but lost the game by only two points.

Boys' Hockey also had a tight loss on Wednesday, with a 2-1 score to Henderson.

Our U17 Open Basketball Boys' team qualified for quarter-final playoffs last night (Thursday 31 July) and played against Kelston Boys' High School. Unfortunately we did not get the win.

Our Girls' Hockey team played against Rutherford on Thursday for their second game of the Term 3 competition - results still pending.

This Friday marks an important game for our First XI Boys, going up against Western Springs for an away game, competing for their place in the A2 league. Kick off at 3pm.

Junior Netball go into their last round robin game on Saturday before playoffs commence next week, most teams looking good to progress to semi-finals. Football is still in action, with our 10A Boys' team and 9 Blue Boys' team playing here at home on Saturday morning. The 2nd Xl Boys' Football are at the top of their league and have qualified for quarter-final playoffs, playing at Takapuna Grammar. Our lst XV Rugby Boys' team are playing here at home on Saturday, and our U70s Boys' Rugby are away at Pakuranga.

Only a couple more weeks of the winter season left to go!
