"Definite Career Path"

Brooklyn Bush and Daniel Shaw (Year 11 students) are certainly two people you want to meet ... especially if in need of a rescue!

Nearing the end of their second year of a three-year Youth Search And Rescue programme (involving 1800 hours of training over three years), Brooklyn and Daniel are always ready for a rescue mission!

"Our Dean posted information about the YSAR on our google classrooms last year, and we thought it looked really interesting," says Brooklyn, who is thoroughly enjoying the lifeskills and navigating elements of the rugged course.

"It's a definite career path, for sure!"

During the weekend, the boys are busy carrying out rescue exercises, or searching rugged terrain for 'missing parties'. "We use navigation, GPS and map reading to find them, and practise carrying 'injured people' on stretcher carriers through the bush," says Daniel.

"Youth Search And Rescue gives you lots of confidence and life skills. We've got our VHF radio licence, Day Skippers licence and have current First Aid certificates."

YSAR is calling all secondary school students wanting to make a difference and gain national search and rescue emergency response qualifications. Learn skills for land and sea:

  • Survival, self-leadership and an introduction to SAR and
  • emergency response and bush craft training.
  • Search and Rescue and Emergency Response methodology,
  • Learn Emergency Management, gain competencies in
  • managing a full-scale emergency response and deploying
  • the appropriate resources to deliver a positive outcome.

Applications are now open for YSAR's three-year training programme. Applications close on 30 September.
