Congratulations to Lewis Child (Year 10 W10HEN) winner of the Piha Surf Life Saving Club Junior Male Surf Life Guard of the Year!
This award recognises Lewis’ exceptional skill, dedication and enthusiasm, not to mention countless hours and an unwavering commitment to volunteering with patrols at Piha Beach.
Lewis, who became a qualified surf lifesaver last year, has always had a passion for helping others. He is an active patroller who is regularly at the water’s edge offering preventative advice and guidance. He also really enjoys interacting and talking with members of the public.
“I decided to follow my passion and emailed the surf lifesaving club to find out what I needed to do to be part of the club,”says Lewis.
Always enthusiastic, Lewis looks forward to getting involved and being a proactive part of the Piha community. He also enjoys talking with members of his patrol and other patrol members - everyone ranging from students to retirees.
“I enjoy doing rescues, first aids, preventative actions, and just being part of the team as well as the action. I do really enjoy helping people.”
Over the season, Lewis took part in every course available to him and enjoyed a varied range of training activities, including Surf First Aid, an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewman course, and a Rock Safety and Awareness module.
Lewis’ next goal is gaining his Intermediate Lifeguard Award. He still cannot believe he has received this award!
