Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne - A totara has fallen in the great forest of Tāne.

It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of greatly respected local kaumātua Hori (George) Winikerei Taua, surrounded by his loving whānau in the early hours of 17 June 2025.

Fondly known as Pāpā George by many, he was the eldest living member of Te Kawerau-ā-Maki iwi and generously shared valuable knowledge passed down through generations.

Deputy Principals Drew McWhinnie and Elaine Webb passed our condolences on behalf of Green Bay High School to George’s whānau at Makaurau Marae, in particular to Robyn Taua-Gordon, Josie Wall, Aleesha Taua and Tyler Taua-Gordon. Whaea Tia McIver also acknowledged George at our Matariki ceremony.

Our thoughts and aroha are with the whānau at this time.
