The "horror" of nearly missing the entry deadline for the 48hr Film festival soon turned to jubilation for the GBHS 48Hr film crew!

With a submission deadline of 7pm on Sunday night - the team managed to get their entry in … and had a few nervous few moments, first being told they were disqualified due to a late entry and then huge relief when their official submission time of 6.59.57 meant that they had made it on time.

"Yes, it was a real emotional rollercoaster. That hour after being told we were disqualified was pretty brutal, but happy tears were shed when we got the second call! The students were so stoked to qualify and I received some great feedback from their parents," says proud teacher Jonathan Fowler.

GBHS's film crew found out at 7pm on Friday night that they had to make a "Possession" movie - with special criteria including a traveller, a match-cut between two shots, a warning and an exit.

By 9pm the team had a "pretty solid idea" of what story they wanted to tell, and finished the script in the early hours of Saturday morning, with the rest of Saturday spent bringing the script to life before a looooong night of editing.

Sunday was used to plug any gaps and fix numerous issues (such as editing software corrupted files, and a microphone dying during a scene to name a few - including one of our team members catching COVID a few days before the shoot) before ending in a mad dash to finish the edit in time to upload the film before the 7pm deadline.

"All of these issues were met with enthusiasm and some very creative problem-solving," says Jonathan, adding "We learned a lot from the experience, that's for sure!

"We're excited for next year, but quite relieved it's 360-odd days away."

So, what is the 48Hr Film Festival all about? It is an annual film competition where teams of filmmakers are assigned a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue, and have just 48 hours to create a short film containing those elements!

Filmmakers don't know what genre they will be shooting until the start of the competition. All creativity: writing, shooting, and editing must occur within the 48-hour timeframe, beginning Friday evening at 7pm and ending Sunday at 7pm.

The best films are selected by judges to compete in the city finals. Then the judges select the best of the best to compete in the Grand Final event.
