1st XI Cricket update
After a few losses, some tight games and some tough games, the 1st XI cricket team has come away with two recent wins!
GBHS 139/6 against Orewa Composite 138/7 and GBHS 212/6 against ACG Parnell Composite 211/10.
Against Orewa, we won the toss and elected to bowl. With some tight bowling, we quickly took some wickets but struggled to get their opener out. Sakuna Karunarathna took 4 wickets over the course of the game with his 8 overs 4/25. Other wickets taken by Camron de Villiers 4 overs 1/21, Seth Hewage 6 overs 1/13, Louis Walter 4 overs 1/9. Handy with the bat were Neth Hewage 42 off 91 balls, Louis Walter 42 off 55 balls and Jake Russell 20 off 46 balls GBHS won with 4 wickets in hand and 4 overs to spare.
That win led into the ACG Parnell Composite game at the very dry ground of the Avondale Racecourse on 21 March. ACG Parnell won the toss and elected to bat - and bat they did - setting a high target for us of 211. Stand out bowler with a 5 wicket haul was Keenan Wilson in his 7.5 overs 5/33. With a huge target to chase the aim of the game was stay at the crease, take the runs on offer and the opportunities when the balls came. The GBHS batters kept the spectators on the edge of their seats till the very last over where 5 runs were needed to win. Ball 1 Camron de Villers hit a 4, only 1 run needed, 2nd ball Camron run OUT, 3rd ball dot ball, 4th ball Sakuna Karunarathna 1 run and a win! Solid batting by Nathan Hill (22 off 37), Louis Walter (33 off 55), Luke Russell (50 off 46), Jake Russell (33 off 56), and Camron de Villiers (38 off 36).
All the hard work by the boys is paying off. A huge thanks to Coaches Craig Wilson and Aaron Russell and all the parents that spend 6 hours each Saturday supporting the boys, plus all the driving.
This coming Saturday, we are off to Botany Downs Secondary College before a break until term 4. Who will be awarded Terry, Player of the Day trophy, to care for through terms 2 and 3? Watch this space!
