GROOMING AND PRESENTATION RELATED TO THE SCHOOL UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE 2026
At Green Bay High School, all students, except Year 13, will wear the school uniform. This fosters a sense of identity within the school and provides a common grooming standard on which to build positive attitudes toward neatness and cleanliness. It will also provide a measure of security by identifying non-students on the school property.
GENERAL:
- All students must follow the uniform and dress code expectations. Uniform and dress code standards apply when travelling to and from school or on official off-campus activities.
- Generally, permission will not be given to wear non-regulation items. However, in some limited circumstances, this will be considered. Such requests must be made in consultation with the school by a parent or guardian, and will only apply for a specified time.
- Any student who is wearing an incorrect or inappropriate item of clothing is required to report to a Deputy Principal or Dean before school, or at the beginning of period 1, so that the matter can be remedied before classes for the day. Students can expect to have non-uniform items replaced for the day with school-owned uniform. The school-owned uniform is to be returned to the student reception at the end of the school day.
- School-wide consequences apply when this procedure is not followed. In this situation, contact with home will be made.
GROOMING FOR STUDENTS IN UNIFORM – Year 9-12:
The uniform should be clean, tidy and worn as designed. Our uniform has a wide range of items to choose from, so all students should be able to find a suitable combination.
- Shoes must be flat, plain black, with black soles and black laces. (No boots or high-top footwear)
- Sandals must be flat, plain black with a black sole and a backstrap.

- Hair accessories (hair bands/ties, etc.) must be of a natural hair colour or school uniform colours.
- Hijab must be of a natural hair colour or school uniform colours
- Acrylic, gel or any artificial nails are not permitted, nor is nail polish.
- Makeup should be minimal and natural in appearance.
- Jewellery should be minimal.
This means:

- Students are permitted to wear a maximum of two small studs per ear and in the lobe only, and a small nose stud. No other facial piercings are permitted.
- All uniform items must be the regulation design and style - as purchased through Argyle (www.argyleonline.co.nz).
- School sports team jackets or sweatshirts are only to be worn at sports events.
- Garments worn under the school uniform shirts must be white only.
GROOMING FOR STUDENTS IN YEAR 13 - AND FOR ALL STUDENTS ON NON-UNIFORM DAYS WHILE ON-SITE:
While Year 13 students do not wear a school uniform, we have an expectation of ‘smart-casual’ dress.
The choice of clothing must be appropriate for a school setting, which is the combined workplace for staff and students. Student dress must be respectful of this setting. Students have an obligation to meet grooming and presentation standards that are no lower than those expected of other students.
- Clothing must be neat, tidy, not worn or dirty, and not ripped or frayed.
- Clothing must contain no objectionable or offensive messages or pictures. This includes no bandanas.
- All clothing must have the same coverage expectations of the school uniform.
- Clothing must be worn appropriately for safety, especially in laboratories, PE, and workshop areas.
- Students must wear footwear; jandals or slides are not acceptable. Closed shoes are required in workshops and laboratories.
- Extreme hairstyles and/or artificial colouring are unacceptable.
- Jewellery must be kept to a minimum.
ALL STUDENTS WEARING NON-UNIFORM AT OFF-SITE EVENTS:
The choice of clothing must be appropriate for the event. Student dress must be respectful of this and represent our school values. Students have an obligation to meet grooming and presentation standards that are no lower than those expected of other students.
- Clothing must be neat, tidy, not worn or dirty, and not ripped or frayed.
- Clothing must contain no objectionable or offensive messages or pictures. This includes no bandanas.
- Clothing must be worn appropriately for the specific setting and for safety.
- Students must wear appropriate footwear. Closed shoes are required in workshops and laboratories.
- Extreme hairstyles and/or artificial colouring are unacceptable.
- Jewellery must be kept to a minimum.
NON-UNIFORM DAYS AT SCHOOL FOR ALL STUDENTS:
- Clothing must be appropriate for the school setting (i.e. coverage), which is the combined workplace for staff and students. Student dress must be respectful of this setting.
- Clothing must contain no objectionable or offensive messages or pictures. This includes no bandanas.
- At school carnivals and dress-up events, students do not wear items (such as masks) that would prevent them from being easily recognised.
CULTURAL OR RELIGIOUS CONSIDERATION
Education in New Zealand is universal, compulsory and secular – and so are our school uniform and dress code guidelines. However, we recognise that some people may wish to depart from our dress regulations for cultural or religious reasons. In these circumstances, the parent or guardian should discuss this issue with the relevant Dean or SLT.
