GBHS's 03PED students embarked on their much-anticipated annual trip, Into the Deep Blue, designed to analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activities and develop effective safety strategies.
The journey began with a trip north to the Tutukaka campground, where students set up their tents and spent the evening gazing up at the breathtaking Milky Way. The next morning, 80 excited 03PED students and 10 dedicated staff set off for the renowned Poor Knights Islands, a world-class marine reserve.
Students were treated to an unforgettable display of marine life - including a large pod of approx 100 common dolphins chasing bait balls beneath and around our boats, followed by the spectacular sight of massive yellowfin tuna leaping and diving through the waves.
Upon arriving at the Poor Knights sanctuary, students disembarked in their groups, ready to explore the underwater wonders. Snorkelling through tunnels, venturing into Shark Fin Cave, and navigating the stunning marine environment.
Students encountered an incredible array of sea life. From large snapper and porcupine fish to octopuses, starfish, and vibrant blue fish, the diversity of marine creatures was truly mesmerizing.
The return journey was equally breathtaking, touring the iconic Rikoriko Cave, passing through natural archways, and navigating holes in the rock formations - and watching a solitary seal basking near the water while hundreds of trevally swam gracefully at the surface.
Overall, the trip was an incredible success, blending adventure, education, and safety awareness. Students gained valuable insights into outdoor safety management while experiencing the extraordinary beauty of the Poor Knights. Ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all. We can’t wait for next year’s adventure.
