What is Labour Day?
Labour Day was first celebrated in Aotearoa on 28 October 1890. Labour Day commemorates the day when thousands of trade union members and supporters attended Marches in the main city centres highlighting the need to cap the standard working day to eight-hours. Government employees were given the day off to attend these parades and many businesses closed for at least part of the day. Click here to read more about Aotearoa's Labour Day History.
