Bravery on the Board
With both the Junior and Senior Blitz Chess Tournaments now concluded, a huge shoutout must go to all the students who stepped up and braved the intense mental warfare that comes with the game of Chess!
Win or lose, every player showed courage, focus, and sharp thinking - qualities worthy of recognition.
The action began in Week 3 with our Year 9 and Year 10 players battling it out for a spot in the finals. There were highs, there were blunders, and there were brilliant tactics - but in the end, it was a pair of Year 9 students who rose to the top. Congratulations to Kingston Li (Piha) who claimed victory over Ilyas Naushad in a thrilling final and was ultimately crowned Junior 2025 Blitz Chess Champion. He rawe pai korua for an outstanding tournament!
The Senior Blitz Tournament saw 16 fierce competitors bringing their best to the board. The audience was treated to sharp combinations, brutal forks, knightmares, cunning traps, and moments of pure genius. Creativity, foresight, and nerves of steel were on full display.
The semi-finals saw three Year 13 students and one Year 11 student face off in tense matchups. When the pressure was on, John Arthars (Muriwai) held his nerve and emerged victorious, earning the title of Senior 2025 Blitz Chess Champion. What an incredible performance!
