Community Matariki Celebrations

Thank you to our Community - celebrating Matariki together.
During the recent term break, Green Bay High School celebrated Matariki with a ceremony at Tauihu (Green Bay Beach) learning how the beach received its name, as well as the history of Te Mānukanuka o Hoturoa (now known as Manukau Harbour).
We also devoted time to honoring those who had passed over the past year and welcomed the new fronds who were born over that same period of time - before returning to our Kura for hākari of a hāngī. It was a very successful event!
We are very grateful for all the support we received leading up to the celebration, from whānau, friends, and local businesses. Special shout-out goes to those who were here before and/or after the event assisting with preparations and cleaning!
We also wanted to acknowledge and thank the incredible businesses who either donated or discounted grocery items so that we could put this hāngī on for our community. We would love for our school community to support local and give back to the following businesses:
- New World Green Bay
- Aussie Butcher New Lynn
- Fruit World New Lynn
- Fresh Choice Glen Eden
- Pak N Save Lincoln Road
Matariki ahunga nui, Matariki hunga nui. The great mounds (the abundance of kai) of Matariki, Matariki the gatherer of people.
Mānawatia a Matariki!
