Māori astrologer Matua Rereata Makiha:
GBHS tauira were honoured to host renowned Māori astrologer Matua Rereata Makiha (Ngāti Mahurehure, Te Aupōuri, Te Arawa) who spoke about te Maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar) and the importance of preserving cultural and historical knowledge.
Sharing some of his vast knowledge with korero-tuku-iho (oral history and traditions) Matua Rereata gave examples of how te Maramataka tracks the movement of nature, helping to predict the best time for planting, harvesting, fishing, gathering kai etc. Moon phases can also have an effect on our moods and energy levels.
Tuia ki te rangi
Tuia ki te whenua
Tuia ki te moana
Tuia ki te here tangata
E rongo te pō, e rongo te ao
This whakataukī (above) reminds us of the connection between the people and the natural elements of the world we live in.
