GBHS's final Kawhe & Kōrero guest speaker for 2025 was Dr Miro Erkintalo - Professor and Head of Department of Physics at The University of Auckland.

Students were very interested in hearing about his career pathway and ongoing world-leading research in the fields of laser physics and nonlinear optics, including emerging opportunities available for students interested in STEM subjects.

Dr Miro Erkintalo trained as an engineer with a particular focus in technical physics, mathematics and computer science, and conducts world-leading research in the fields of laser physics and nonlinear optics.

The overarching aim of his research is to build foundational physics knowledge for enabling new laser-based technologies. Dr Erkintalo’s research has been recognised by several awards, including the New Zealand Prime Minister's Emerging Scientist Award.
