Ministry of Education acknowledges Innovative Literacy Approach at Green Bay High School!

GBHS's lead literacy team was interviewed by a panel from the Ministry of Education recently, as part of a filming resource.

These video interviews capture our GBHS school-wide literacy initiative and will be used to help guide other schools in secondary settings across New Zealand. This approach is centred on the principles of structured literacy; using a science of learning research basis as well.

The team is made up of teachers: Jo Orr, Renee McGlashan, Heather Eccles, Iain McMahon, and Richard Kearney.

Green Bay High School's approach has been acknowledged for the innovative ways we have begun to embed consistent approaches in how we teach reading. Each department has developed their own discipline-specific reading system to help our students to access text.

This cross-curricular innovation means the experience of our learners is more stream-lined as they can see the explicit phases we can use to access any text in any subject.

This high level of consistency in how we approach the teaching of the reading process means our students are best placed to consolidate this approach to how we read. Additionally, it means our students may see the connection in skill development across all of our subjects.

This has been a significant acknowledgement for our school's literacy team and our entire school staff who have worked collaboratively to create subject-specific reading systems.

In 2025, the team will be launching their next phase - a school-wide writing system which is also subject-specific and co-constructed by our subject specialists across our school.
