Outstanding Orienteering

The Auckland Schools' Rogaine Championships took place yesterday (Sunday 8 June 2025) held in conjuction with North West Orienteering Club (NWOC).
Both events saw secondary school students AND community/parents/staff entrants participating. (A little birdy told us that as well as being a fitness freak, GBHS Science teacher Madeleine Collins is also an orienteering super-star)!
Up hill and down dale, entrants set out amongst Woodhill Forest and the ARC park surrounding the Muriwai golf course for the duration of the 90 minute course.
Rogaine is a form of cross-country navigation, or orienteering, in which individuals or teams visit as many checkpoints/controls as possible within a given time limit.
Participants travel on foot, navigating by map and compass. Instead of following a defined course, the controls may be visited in any order. Each control is allocated different points which are acquired by competitors through visiting the control.
The competitor(s) in each category and grade with the highest score wins: Congratulations to:
- Aidan Barrett-Hamilton (Yr 9) - 1st in Junior boys
- Marina Zheng (Yr 9) and Fran Ishida (Yr 9) - 2nd in Junior Girls team event
- Alexis Heckler (Yr 13) 6th in Senior girls.
