Peace Week 2025

Thursday, 7th August 2025 at 12:00pm

Green Bay High School has commemorated Peace Day and/or Peace Week every year since 1986 in reflection of the bombing of Hiroshima which occurred on 6 August 1945.

Throughout the week, staff and students took centre stage (in B8) at lunchtimes as part of this year' Peace Week activities with 'Poetry For Peace' lunchtime sessions, held in B8.

The staff line-up was:

  • Dr Nick Towner (Monday)
  • Ms Bee (Tuesday)
  • Dr Angelo Tedoldi - Italian poetry (Wednesday)
  • Whaea Tia & Ms Orr - te reo Māori (Thursday)
  • Friday's finale was a Spanish rendition by Mr Tores

This activity, inititated by Mr Adel Salmanzadeh was a wonderful opportunity to listen to some poetry and have a korero about peace in a safe and positive space - alongside a great selection of poetry books to read and enjoy.

Students also had time to reflect on how poems can have different meanings for different people, depending on their current state of reflection. Many had a go at creating a haiku 'on the spot' with some very insightful renditions!
