RECYLCE A DEVICE (RAD):

Green Bay High School's RAD group has been announced as one of the winners of the 2024 Woolworths Growing for Good Grants - celebrating New Zealand’s Young Environmental Champions!

Applications were received throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand, full of insightful and passionate ideas about protecting and caring for the environment.

With a share of $50,000 worth of grants, the judges selected 11 winning schools that proposed the most innovative project ideas involving their local communities.

What is the GBHS RAD Club all about? At the start of term 2, GBHS in partnership with Remojo Tech, set up provisions for a group of tech-minded rangatahi to learn the art of refurbishing laptops. These tech apprentices have now become our RAD (Recycle A Device) heroes, mastering the skills needed to breathe new life into each device and gaining an insight into the tech world in the process.

GBHS were fortunate to gain funding from the Woolworths Growing for Good grant funding initiative, enabling purchases of hardware and equipment, allowing each RAD student to work in a professional way, and keeping track of an array of computer parts.

Once the work is done, these rejuvenated laptops are ready to find new homes, with a number already gifted to individuals and whānau who need them most. In a world that is increasingly digital, RAD provides the tools and skills essential for rangatahi to navigate their futures. Here’s what some of our RAD heroes have to say about their experience:

Wilfred Mui (Yr 10) “I've dreamt of working and building a PC since I was a small kid, and the skills from RAD allow me to demonstrate my skills and help repair laptops for others to use...It makes me feel proud." Adding "The experience from RAD has exposed me to real-life applications of an IT job, and much more”.

Reuben Ferabend (Yr 11) “I joined RAD because I like technology, and liked the idea of repairing and generally tinkering with computers... I'm glad that I can put my skills and knowledge to use, helping people and increasing the lifetime of laptops”.
