Otago University Research

Green Bay High School's Dr Angelo Tedoldi (Science, Chemistry, Biology teacher) and Madeleine Collins (Science, Physics, Earth Space Science, Chemisty teacher) will be taking three Year 10 students and three year 12 students (flying to Dunedin) during the term break - as part of their ongoing scientific research project, investigating the wonderful world of natural eco-systems, with lichens leading the way!

Olivia Tukia, Bailey Newman, Elena Brunt, Benji Godsmark, Thoramei Resture, Malia Fifita were selected to take part in an investigative project in partnership with Otago university.

Earlier this year, the school science department received funding from WeSTEM to run an investigative project where students will be collected lichens from different trees throughout the school and local community. Samples were sent to the team's science partner, Research Geologist Adam Martin at GNS Science (Dunedin) who specialises in Geology, Petrology, Geochronology, and Geochemistry. The project is using lichen as a bio indicator of air quality.

WeSTEM is an initiative of Te Hononga Akoranga COMET and is funded by the Ministry of Pacific People’s Toloa Community Impact funds to increase Pacific people’s participation in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).
