Kia ora e te whānau,
It’s been a big week in education, with much in the media after the proposal to replace NCEA with new national qualifications was announced on Monday. There is a lot of work going on at school and through our curriculum networks to find out more information about the proposed changes and to understand the detail that sits behind them. I know some of our students in Years 9 and 10 are confused about how the proposed changes will affect them. Students currently in Years 9 and 10 will sit the existing Level 1, 2 and 3 NCEA qualifications as they move through Years 11, 12 and 13. Students who join GBHS as Year 9 students in 2026 will work towards the proposed new qualifications. We want an education system that works well for all students, so it is important to have your say as part of the consultation process.
On Wednesday evening, Te Rōpū Manawa Kuaka came together for a hui. It was wonderful to see so many of our migrant families coming together to connect at this event, and it was a real highlight of my week. These hui are such a powerful reminder of the strength and richness of our diverse community. I am looking forward to our Pasifika Fono next Wednesday.
It’s been a wet and wild week on the sports fields, and with many teams heading into the final weeks of the season, I want to acknowledge the resilience and sportsmanship shown by so many of our students. I’ve been particularly impressed by the way many of our players stay calm and focused, even when faced with some challenging behaviour from opposing teams. That kind of maturity takes courage and respect. We are developing real strength at GBHS across a variety of codes. Talent and hard work built on a foundation of strong values will ensure our teams go far.
Last night marked the final meeting for our current Green Bay High School Board of Trustees. I want to sincerely thank them for their dedication and hard work over the past three years. It has been a real pleasure working with them. Special thanks to our teacher representative, Renee McGlashan and student representative James MacDonald, who have made significant contributions to the Board during their tenure.
You may have seen in the media that many schools are struggling to find people willing to stand for Board elections. That’s not the case at Green Bay High School - we are incredibly fortunate to have 20 candidates standing this year. The Board plays a vital role in the strategic direction and governance of the school. When voting opens, please make sure your voice is part of the process.
Have a great weekend.
