Y8 Transition Visits

Thursday, 24th November 2022 at 11:50am

Welcome to the GBHS Whānau! The move from intermediate school to high school can be a significant event for our rangatahi. In order to make this change as easy as possible, GBHS runs a structured transition programme for all Year 8 students intending to come to Green Bay High School in 2023.

The visit is designed to help relieve some of the stress which can be associated with starting at a new school as well as an initial chance to begin building relationships with key people.

Thursday, 24 November, marked the start of our transition visits, beginning with students from Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, Green Bay School, and other schools. Y8 students will also be attending on one of the following days:

  • Monday 28 November: Students from Glen Eden Intermediate (Te Henga and Karekare mini schools).
  • Tuesday 29 November: Students from Glen Eden Intermediate (Piha and Muriwai mini schools). Students will be collected from Glen Eden Intermediate by bus at 9.30am which will be supervised by Green Bay High School staff. Students will return by bus to Glen Eden Intermediate by 1pm, again supervised by Green Bay High School staff.

The day will begin with a meeting in the Auditorium. Students will then be placed into small groups where they will take a non-verbal reasoning assessment to further assist us with placing students into appropriate classes. This is a standardised assessment that involves no reading or writing. It provides an insight into the abilities of students who think more easily in images than words, those who have limited reading skills and those who have English as an additional language. We will use this information in conjunction with the range of other data we receive such asTTle and PATs tests for reading and maths, school reports and enrolment interviews, to place students into the class we believe will best meet their learning needs.

Following the assessment, students will meet some of the people who will be significant in their life at Green Bay High School, and will participate in transition activities that will assist them with becoming more familiar to our school. The visit will be about 3 hours long in total, and students will have morning tea at at Green Bay High School. They will not need to bring their school bags.

We look forward to working in partnership with your family.
