Kia ora e te whānau,
It’s been a great week! One of the highlights was seeing the first performance of our GBHS Kapa Haka at the Whānau Hui on Wednesday evening. I am so proud of this roopu and am looking forward to their next performance at Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Next week is the National Secondary Schools Tournament week, and we have three teams competing. Best of luck to our 1st XI girls’ and boys’ football and our Premier girls’ netball team next week - I’m looking forward to seeing some games and hearing about their progress across the week.
It’s a busy time of the year for our senior students as they complete their final internal assessments and begin preparations for the school exam period in weeks 8 and 9. This exam period used to be called ‘mocks’ or ‘practice exams,’ however, many students will sit assessments during this time that will contribute towards their NCEA qualification.
Level 1 students and those who haven’t yet achieved their CAA Literacy & Numeracy credits: The next round of CAA Literacy and Numeracy assessments will be held during this exam period. These are important for students at Levels 1, 2 and 3 who are yet to achieve their Literacy and Numeracy credits, as well as students in Year 10 who are yet to pass.
For our Year 11, 12 and 13 students, this exam period provides the opportunity to sit exams in preparation for their externals in Term 4 and to ensure there is evidence if they need a derived grade at the end of the year. These exams are great preparation for the external exams in Term 4, helping students and teachers to identify areas of strength and areas of challenge that need additional work. If, for some reason, a student isn’t able to sit their external exam in Term 4, their results in the upcoming school exams will be the only information we can use to support a derived grade application. Every year, we have some students missing out on qualifications or entry in courses and programmes because they chose not to sit exams, thinking that all would be fine. For Year 12 students, the learning that they do for the externally assessed standards is also the foundation that is built on in Year 13.
We want all students to be able to put their best foot forward, and this starts with planning and preparation towards the upcoming school exams.

Turf Makeover
It’s all systems go as GBHS sets sail for a new shade structure to be installed on the sports turf.
Green Bay High School’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce work is soon to commence on an all-weather shade canopy structure, enabling year-round use of the turf.
Providing sun protection in the summer and shelter from wet weather during the cooler months, the all-weather canopy, funded by the GBHS Board, will be a huge asset for our Physical Education department and school sport teams.
