Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa,
Our 12 schools are part of a strong and established local schools network known as the Kōtuitui Kāhui Ako. Our individual school boards acknowledge the government’s recent amendment to the Education and Training Act 2020, removing the requirement for school boards to “give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.” We are in support of a reversal of this amendment to the Act.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a foundational agreement that underpins the identity of Aotearoa New Zealand. For our Kāhui Ako, Te Tiriti is a guiding framework that strengthens relationships, supports equity, and enhances the wellbeing and success of all tamariki.
Our commitment reflects long-held values shared across our schools, and it will continue to guide our strategic direction and decision-making. As a Kāhui Ako, we reaffirm that we will:
- Uphold the principles of partnership, protection, and participation in all governance decisions.
- Work in genuine partnership with mana whenua, whānau, hapū, and iwi to reflect local histories, mātauranga, and tikanga within our schools.
- Safeguard and promote te reo Māori me ōna tikanga as taonga that enrich learning and identity.
- Ensure policies, planning, and practice reflect respect for Māori aspirations, and contribute to equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners.
These commitments are integral to who we are as a Kāhui Ako. We affirm that our ongoing responsibility to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is grounded in integrity, respect, and our shared vision for education in Aotearoa.
