Christchurch Trip

A group of Y10 students had an amazing day at Mangere Mountain, yesterday - in preparation of greater discoveries in Christchurch.
Students who have been selected to attend the Science Christchurch trip, in November, engaged in a range of team-building activities, exploring the maunga and learning about its surface features and formation, as well as conducting a biodiversity study focussed on invertebrates and birds. The data collected will give students a baseline for comparison when they go to Christchurch in Term 4.
While there, students will be working with researchers and scientists from the University of Canterbury.
Data collected from Mangere Mountain will be used to compare the Auckland volcanic field to the volcanic landscape of the Port Hills of Christchurch, as well as the biodiversity in the two urban centres.
Students will also be spending a good deal of time looking at the invertebrates on the Red Zone of Christchurch, as it has been largely devoid of significant human influence since the earthquakes.
