Green Bay High School is always awash with colour, fun, laughter, and sportsmanship during our school-wide House events. House competitions provide a sense of competition and whanau support, through a range of school based activities. House events are run throughout the year with points awarded for each event. As well as school wide competitions, individual students can earn House points for outstanding academic or community based achievements. The Leader Board, situated in Student Services, clearly shows which House is in the lead.

Students belong to one of five Houses which are named after our local beaches:

Anawhata (black)
Karekare (yellow)
Muriwai (blue)
Piha (green)
Whatipu (red)

Staff V Students: annual Term 4 lunchtime competition.
Get on down to the Staff V Students matches, taking place at lunchtime throughout this week and watch history take place - if students get the upper hand, that is!

According to a reliable source, GBHS staff teams have remained undefeated for the past 10 years, with only ONE netball game knocking them off their 100% victory perch.

Today's Touch Rugby match saw the Staff team win with a whopping 6-0 defeat.

Will the Students' team come back steadfast and determined for tomorrow's Football frenzy? Be sure to cheer on your peers as they attempt to create GBHS history!

REMINDER:
Changes to 007 Bus are still in place:
As of Monday 23 September, the 007 bus travelling from GBHS to Oratia via Glengarry Road, NO LONGER stops at Titirangi Village.

Students who need to get to the Village should make other arrangements: walking with friends, catching the 005 bus, or catching a public bus for this short distance.

Ultimately we are working with AT to look into providing an additional 007 bus for the morning and after school runs ...but this is proving hard to make happen.

Thank you for your cooperation. We are keeping an eye on this situation and will let you know of any further changes.

Please note: this area is out of bounds (includes decks, rooms and surrounding field). The second building site is underway, there will be extra noise around the new building site as the footings are created earlier this week (Monday and Tuesday).

Green Bay High School has had a significant increase in sports participation numbers this year and many sporting codes have been positively impacted due to this growth.

Football continued its rise with 12 teams competing this season, and several teams finishing in the top 3 of their division. Our 1st XI Boys' team finished 4th in A2 and had an excellent tournament away in Whangārei.

Girls’ 1st XI Football had a great year finishing 3rd in their A2 season and, even more impressively, finishing 6th place at the Kathy Seaward tournament. The U85kg Rugby Union side made the final of their grade narrowly losing in 10-8 in treacherous conditions.

Our Netball teams (all 10 of them!) showcased exceptional skill and teamwork, with senior and junior teams making impressive strides. The Premier team finished runners-up in their grade and had a successful UNISS tournament.

Basketball once again saw an increase with 5 teams competing and huge growth in the girls' teams.

Young Writers:
GBHS's Year 9 and Year 10 Young Writers students were inspired to hear that great ideas and imagination are the heart of effective writing, along with a clear awareness of the reader.

Students were very fortunate to have a visit from New Zealand’s renowned author and Auckland local, Anne Kayes, earlier this week.

Anne spoke about her journey to becoming a published author and responded to student questions such as "How to manage ‘writer’s block?" and how to turn a great idea into an excellent piece of writing. As well as the process leading up to the publication of a piece of writing.

Anne Kayes is a published author with a focus on young adult fiction. Her collection of stories for 8-12 year-olds, Tūī Street Tales, won the 2016 Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Award. Her second book, Tūī Street Heroes, was published in 2019 and received a 2020 Storylines Notable Book Award. Tūī Street Legends was published in 2023 and received a 2023 Storylines Notable Book Award. Anne’s first young adult novel, In Our Own Back Yard, is about the experiences of a 15-year-old girl during the 1981 Springbok Tour.

Evie Whitworth (Yr 10) extends our school values of Excellence, Courage, Respect, and Responsiveness within her Navy Cadet training of the Sea Cadet Corps.

Evie has been a member of the TS Achilles (Auckland) for the past two years, and she says she really enjoys the self-confidence, discipline, and teamwork that the cadetship offers.

"It is really supportive, I encourage others my age to get involved," says Evie, who has brought some pamphlets with more information to school, located in Student Reception, for students interested in joining.

Activities include sailing, kayaking, range shooting, and marching drills. Navy Cadets also have the opportunity to experience life in the RNZN, through Ship and Base visits.

"Trainings are every Thursday during the school term," says Evie, adding "We also do activities like sailing, kayaking, range shooting, and marching drills."

Training Ship ACHILLES is a Sea Cadet unit of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. Navy Cadets also have the opportunity to experience life in the RNZN, through Ship and Base visits.

CHANGES TO 007 BUS:
The 007 bus currently travels from GBHS to Oratia via Glengarry Road, stopping at Titirangi Village. This is about to change!

Ake Ake Ake - A FOREVER LANGUAGE
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of this country.

The theme for Te Wiki 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future.

Under enduring pressure, te reo Māori has shown it will adapt and survive. It grows with our people, our culture and our environment.

Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard

Green Bay High School has some amazing rangitahi about to make their mark on the world.

Year 13 students Aedan Doorley, Miller Van Sambeek, Max Marvin and Hailey Helwes, were invited by YES (Young Enterprise Scheme) to attend the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame gala on Wednesday night. (Pictured with Business Studies teacher, Debbie Keymer).

The NZ BHoF evening was a night of celebration, stories and inspiration from some of NZ’s most outstanding business leaders. The evening sparked inspiration, helping our ākonga navigate their pathways within the New Zealand business world.

Inspiring stories of the seven 2024 Laureates were heard - stories of enterprise, hard work, and success. Most have also contributed generously to their communities.

The New Zealand Business Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates individuals who have made a significant contribution to the economic and social development of New Zealand.

New Zealand International Biology Olympiad team:

A huuuuge congratulations to Lukáš Correll-Trnka (Year 12) from Green Bay High School who has been successful in passing the first entrance exam for the NZIBO (International Biology Olympiad) team.

This entrance exam was open to all senior Biology students throughout New Zealand.

We are very pleased to announce that Lukáš (who was the only entrant from our school (due to late notice and sports camps etc) has made it through to the next stage!

This is a phenomenal opportunity - just making it past the entrance exam is something to be extremely proud of! The exam is very challenging, requiring lots of lateral thinking and the application of biological concepts to new contexts.

Lukáš finished amongst the top 240 students in the country and has now been invited to join a tutorial programme where he will spend the next few months learning, discussing, and being assessed on a wide range of biology topics.

This will culminate in a selection exam on the 26 February 2025, whereby the top 20-25 in this exam take part in a residential Practical Training Camp during the April (2025) school holidays. The top four of the camp will represent New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad, to be held in the Philippines in July next year.

GBHS had some great results from the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee event held on Sunday (Olivia Woolford Yr 12 was set to compete on Saturday, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to illness).

Jack Hansen (Yr 13) had a nail-biting final, after leading most of the way he narrowly lost, finishing in 2nd place in the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee. Jack knocked James MacDonald (Yr 12) out in another close match (15 - 14) and was also on the podium in 3rd= place.

Travis West-Hill (Yr 12) finished 10th in the 32-strong field, with Braden Clemmett (Yr 12) in 24th and Matias Ureta (Yr 10) in 27th place respectively.

Jack, James, Travis and Braden also qualified for a spot in the team's competition, placing GBHS in 3rd place!

Senior students (Years 11, 12, 13) will be on STUDY LEAVE from Tuesday 10th September - Friday 20th September 2024 - and are expected to be at school for their exam/s only, returning to a normal school timetable on Monday 23 September 2024.

Year 11 and Year 12 students are to wear the school uniform when sitting exams and attending workshops.

U85 RUGBY FINAL:

GBHS's U85 Boys' rugby team has had an incredible season, standing their ground in the finals against Auckland Grammar!

Proud coach Aaron Harris has nothing but praise for the boys whose commitment and dedication, both on and off the field, shone through.

With the half-time score sitting at 10-3 to Grammar, our boys gave it their all to ensure Grammar did not break GBHS's defence.

Tom Hansen's try, and a penalty kick by Liam Chisholm brought the game within a 2-point margin, leaving players and supporters (from both sides) in nervous anticipation - with the possibility of GBHS storming ahead.

Both teams dug in but were unable to score again, and the final whistle went at 10-8, leaving AGS the winners of the 2024 U85 championship.

Well done to both teams, for an exceptional game.

Special mention to Year 13 students Vincent Brodie, Max Marvin, Ollie Callagher, Jahkoby Mataupu, Ryan Eade, Harry Milner, and Lucas Harvey who have helped to create a culture of school pride, sportsmanship, and leadership - throughout their participation in secondary school sports.

It's great to see GBHS moving up the rugby ranks and leaving a lasting impression!

HUMBLE HERCULEAN: Alex Suddens (Year 12) is sporting a subtle change to his usual belt today, having WON the recent NAGA Championships (North American Grappling Association) in Las Vegas!

Alex won the NAGA championship belt for his no-gi division, going up in weight to 69kg and also placed second in the 69kg Gi division.

A very humble Alex travelled with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team, Tukaha.

Well done, Alex, this is an awesome achievement!

SIGHTS SET ON SPAIN: Congratulations to Japanese International student Anna Hashimoto (Year 12) who has been selected as a scholarship recipient of the Language School Dice Español in Salamanca, Spain!

GBHS Spanish Language teacher, Ana Pascual Rodriguez, says Anna is a worthy recipient and was very pleased to offer this opportunity to her students, in collaboration with Dice Español and the Junta of Castilla y León.

Leaving in January next year, Anna looks forward to living with her host family as part of the immersion experience, seeking to learn and improve her Spanish language while also taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Spanish culture.

Salamanca is a famous university city well attended to those seeking to learn and to improve their Spanish.

GBHS's Language Faculty encourages all students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities and events offered throughout the year to develop their language skills, make long lasting friendships with like minded students and grow culturally.

Who will win this year's Can Drive competition?

Green Bay High School's Service Council (student leadership group) are organising this year's annual Can Drive, in support of Vision West. Students are encouraged to bring cans of food into their form class (or) to drop them off at the school Library.

This is a great way for our GBHS school community to support people in need across the wider community.

Remember every can = 5 house points!

All items will be donated to Vision West. The appeal ends this Friday 6th September.

The Can Drive House competition tally (so far) shows Anawhata currently sitting in 1st place, Whatipu 2nd, Piha 3rd, Muriwai 4th, and Karekare 5th.

Students were very fortunate to have a visit from New Zealand’s renowned author and Auckland local, Anne Kayes, earlier this week.

Anne spoke about her journey to becoming a published author and responded to student questions such as "How to manage ‘writer’s block?" and how to turn a great idea into an excellent piece of writing. As well as the process leading up to the publication of a piece of writing.

Anne Kayes is a published author with a focus on young adult fiction. Her collection of stories for 8-12 year-olds, Tūī Street Tales, won the 2016 Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Award. Her second book, Tūī Street Heroes, was published in 2019 and received a 2020 Storylines Notable Book Award. Tūī Street Legends was published in 2023 and received a 2023 Storylines Notable Book Award. Anne’s first young adult novel, In Our Own Back Yard, is about the experiences of a 15-year-old girl during the 1981 Springbok Tour.

Wednesday September 25th

Evie Whitworth (Yr 10) extends our school values of Excellence, Courage, Respect, and Responsiveness within her Navy Cadet training of the Sea Cadet Corps.

Evie has been a member of the TS Achilles (Auckland) for the past two years, and she says she really enjoys the self-confidence, discipline, and teamwork that the cadetship offers.

"It is really supportive, I encourage others my age to get involved," says Evie, who has brought some pamphlets with more information to school, located in Student Reception, for students interested in joining.

Activities include sailing, kayaking, range shooting, and marching drills. Navy Cadets also have the opportunity to experience life in the RNZN, through Ship and Base visits.

"Trainings are every Thursday during the school term," says Evie, adding "We also do activities like sailing, kayaking, range shooting, and marching drills."

Training Ship ACHILLES is a Sea Cadet unit of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. Navy Cadets also have the opportunity to experience life in the RNZN, through Ship and Base visits.

CHANGES TO 007 BUS:
The 007 bus currently travels from GBHS to Oratia via Glengarry Road, stopping at Titirangi Village. This is about to change!

It seems that a number of our students are using the 007 Bus just for a ride up to Titirangi village - reducing available space on the bus for students who need to go the further distance to Glen Eden and/or Glengarry Road.

Next week (starting Monday 23 September) the 007 bus WILL NOT STOP at Titrangi Village.

Students who need to get to the Village should make other arrangements: walking with friends, catching the 005 bus, or catching a public bus for this short distance.

Ultimately we are working with AT to look into providing an additional 007 bus for the morning and after school runs ...but this is proving hard to make happen.

Thank you for your cooperation. We are keeping an eye on this situation and will let you know of any further changes.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of this country.

The theme for Te Wiki 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future.

Under enduring pressure, te reo Māori has shown it will adapt and survive. It grows with our people, our culture and our environment.

Green Bay High School has some amazing rangitahi about to make their mark on the world.

Year 13 students Aedan Doorley, Miller Van Sambeek, Max Marvin and Hailey Helwes, were invited by YES (Young Enterprise Scheme) to attend the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame gala on Wednesday night. (Pictured with Business Studies teacher, Debbie Keymer).

The NZ BHoF evening was a night of celebration, stories and inspiration from some of NZ’s most outstanding business leaders. The evening sparked inspiration, helping our ākonga navigate their pathways within the New Zealand business world.

Inspiring stories of the seven 2024 Laureates were heard - stories of enterprise, hard work, and success. Most have also contributed generously to their communities.

The New Zealand Business Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates individuals who have made a significant contribution to the economic and social development of New Zealand.

Friday September 13th

New Zealand International Biology Olympiad team:

A huuuuge congratulations to Lukáš Correll-Trnka (Year 12) from Green Bay High School who has been successful in passing the first entrance exam for the NZIBO (International Biology Olympiad) team.

This entrance exam was open to all senior Biology students throughout New Zealand.

We are very pleased to announce that Lukáš (who was the only entrant from our school (due to late notice and sports camps etc) has made it through to the next stage!

This is a phenomenal opportunity - just making it past the entrance exam is something to be extremely proud of! The exam is very challenging, requiring lots of lateral thinking and the application of biological concepts to new contexts.

Lukáš finished amongst the top 240 students in the country and has now been invited to join a tutorial programme where he will spend the next few months learning, discussing, and being assessed on a wide range of biology topics.

This will culminate in a selection exam on the 26 February 2025, whereby the top 20-25 in this exam take part in a residential Practical Training Camp during the April (2025) school holidays. The top four of the camp will represent New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad, to be held in the Philippines in July next year.

Thursday September 12th

GBHS had some great results from the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee event held on Sunday (Olivia Woolford Yr 12 was set to compete on Saturday, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to illness).

Jack Hansen (Yr 13) had a nail-biting final, after leading most of the way he narrowly lost, finishing in 2nd place in the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee. Jack knocked James MacDonald (Yr 12) out in another close match (15 - 14) and was also on the podium in 3rd= place.

Travis West-Hill (Yr 12) finished 10th in the 32-strong field, with Braden Clemmett (Yr 12) in 24th and Matias Ureta (Yr 10) in 27th place respectively.

Jack, James, Travis and Braden also qualified for a spot in the team's competition, placing GBHS in 3rd place!

Wednesday September 11th

U85 RUGBY FINAL:

GBHS's U85 Boys' rugby team has had an incredible season, standing their ground in the finals against Auckland Grammar!

Proud coach Aaron Harris has nothing but praise for the boys whose commitment and dedication, both on and off the field, shone through.

With the half-time score sitting at 10-3 to Grammar, our boys gave it their all to ensure Grammar did not break GBHS's defence.

Tom Hansen's try, and a penalty kick by Liam Chisholm brought the game within a 2-point margin, leaving players and supporters (from both sides) in nervous anticipation - with the possibility of GBHS storming ahead.

Both teams dug in but were unable to score again, and the final whistle went at 10-8, leaving AGS the winners of the 2024 U85 championship.

Well done to both teams, for an exceptional game.

Special mention to Year 13 students Vincent Brodie, Max Marvin, Ollie Callagher, Jahkoby Mataupu, Ryan Eade, Harry Milner, and Lucas Harvey who have helped to create a culture of school pride, sportsmanship, and leadership - throughout their participation in secondary school sports.

It's great to see GBHS moving up the rugby ranks and leaving a lasting impression!

HUMBLE HERCULEAN: Alex Suddens (Year 12) is sporting a subtle change to his usual belt today, having WON the recent NAGA Championships (North American Grappling Association) in Las Vegas!

Alex won the NAGA championship belt for his no-gi division, going up in weight to 69kg and also placed second in the 69kg Gi division.

A very humble Alex travelled with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team, Tukaha.

Well done, Alex, this is an awesome achievement!

SIGHTS SET ON SPAIN: Congratulations to Japanese International student Anna Hashimoto (Year 12) who has been selected as a scholarship recipient of the Language School Dice Español in Salamanca, Spain!

GBHS Spanish Language teacher, Ana Pascual Rodriguez, says Anna is a worthy recipient and was very pleased to offer this opportunity to her students, in collaboration with Dice Español and the Junta of Castilla y León.

Leaving in January next year, Anna looks forward to living with her host family as part of the immersion experience, seeking to learn and improve her Spanish language while also taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Spanish culture.

Salamanca is a famous university city well attended to those seeking to learn and to improve their Spanish.

GBHS's Language Faculty encourages all students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities and events offered throughout the year to develop their language skills, make long lasting friendships with like minded students and grow culturally.

Who will win this year's Can Drive competition?

Green Bay High School's Service Council (student leadership group) are organising this year's annual Can Drive, in support of Vision West. Students are encouraged to bring cans of food into their form class (or) to drop them off at the school Library.

This is a great way for our GBHS school community to support people in need across the wider community.

Remember every can = 5 house points!

All items will be donated to Vision West. The appeal ends this Friday 6th September.

The Can Drive House competition tally (so far) shows Anawhata currently sitting in 1st place, Whatipu 2nd, Piha 3rd, Muriwai 4th, and Karekare 5th.
