Young Writers

GBHS's Year 9 and Year 10 Young Writers students were inspired to hear that great ideas and imagination are the heart of effective writing, along with a clear awareness of the reader.

Anne spoke about her journey to becoming a published author and responded to student questions such as "How to manage ‘writer’s block?" and how to turn a great idea into an excellent piece of writing. As well as the process leading up to the publication of a piece of writing.

Anne Kayes is a published author with a focus on young adult fiction. Her collection of stories for 8-12 year-olds, Tūī Street Tales, won the 2016 Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Award. Her second book, Tūī Street Heroes, was published in 2019 and received a 2020 Storylines Notable Book Award. Tūī Street Legends was published in 2023 and received a 2023 Storylines Notable Book Award. Anne’s first young adult novel, In Our Own Back Yard, is about the experiences of a 15-year old girl during the 1981 Springbok Tour.
