Bringing science to life!
"This may look like fun but it is actually important science, exploring the concepts of physical changes and endothermic and exothermic reactions," says science teacher, Mr Phil Henwood.
Using simple ingredients with no nasty preservatives, Year 10 scientists made delicious ice cream in a bag, within the one-hour lesson! (Toppings added for taste and texture).
The science behind it is... salt!
Salt doesn’t go into the mixture directly, but is used to lower the ice temperature surrounding the bag -filled with an ice cream base. As the ice melts, the ice cream mixture begins to freeze. Shaking the bag while this heat transfer is happening adds air to the ice cream.
Something to try at home, during the term break, perhaps?
