Green Jam at Auckland Zoo:

Students from GBHS's Green Impact group joined the Green Jam sustainability forum, organised by the Wastewise Leaders of Western Springs College, held at the Dome at Auckland Zoo.

This was an opportunity for students to learn more about aspects of sustainability and regenerative practices.

Michael Zuo (Year 10) attended the Imagining Sustainable Futures, Sustainability vs. Regeneration, and Te Whau Pathway Project workshops.

Te Whau Pathway project intends to connect nearby communities with a pathway stretching an impressive 11km along the Whau river.

"At first glance, people may look at it (Te Whau Pathway Project) as simply a shared path, however it has been interesting to learn that it holds much more importance than just that, being said to nurture a sense of pride, ownership, and kaitiakitanga of the Whau Awa," says Michael.

Nora Vastag (Year 10) attended the Sustainable Fabric Creative Mending workshop, presented by Creatives In Schools, Sustainability vs. Regeneration: Designing Projects for Impact, presented by Auckland University Psychology Postgraduate Students and the On Our Way presentation, by Tracy Finlayson from the Ministry of Education on school carbon footprint.

"This was my favourite workshop. It was based around opening students' eyes and helping us build and develop our climate literacy skills," says Nora.

"It was very interesting as it used the same process that governments use to measure and predict cities or countries' carbon footprint. And also the measures they can use to respond to it. It was very insightful in the sense that it is something we can explore at our school, analysing the forms of transport used by students and staff and the climate impact of that use, and how it could be improved”.
