Thursday, 7th September 2023 at 2:30pm

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Greetings to you all:

Next week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (11-17 Hepetema/Mahuru 2023). The theme is: Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori - making the language stronger.

This special week is an opportunity to embrace te reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a living, dynamic, and rich language. Te Wiki o te Reo Māori provides students with the opportunity to explore the values of equity and diversity and learn one of our country's official languages. Students who learn te reo Māori and te ao Māori can make use of key competencies and achieve learning outcomes described in the learning languages and social sciences learning areas.

Did you know?

  • Māori Language Week has been celebrated in Aotearoa since 1975.
  • The Māori Language Act came into force in 1987, making te reo Māori an official language of New Zealand.
  • Mahuru Māori is an initiative begun in 2017 to promote the use of te reo Māori throughout the month of September. Mahuru Māori in 2023 is on Friday 15 September, in line with maramataka Māori (Māori calendar) Mahuru is referred to as a time of regrowth, rebirth and renewal. Spring is a busy time with animals being born and new gardens and food being planted. It is also a time that indicates the coming of matiti kura, the first phase of summer. Let's hope for sunny, warmer weather!

Kīwaha - Give it a go!

  • Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an ideal opportunity to learn a Māori kupu or phrase each day. Check out Te Kupu o te Rā
  • The NZ History website provides a list of 100 Māori words every New Zealander should know and 365 useful words and phrases in te reo Māori.
