TIME: 1.30pm - 7.00pm

Students will finish school at the earlier time of 12:30pm on both days. School buses will NOT be arriving at the earlier time, however the school library will be open.

Parent, Student, Teacher Conferences for Years 9 to 13 are usually held twice a year and provide an opportunity for parents, students and subject teachers to discuss progress, achievement and individual needs. As the name suggests, students are expected to attend and participate. This is a great opportunity to strengthen relationships that support our students, and you, our families and whānau.

Be Social

Year 11 students Ollie Harworth (lead guitar), Joe Irvin (vocalist and rhythm guitar), Björn Griffiths (drums), and Harrison Trousdell (bass guitar) competed in the SmokeFreeRockQuest heats for the first time on Saturday 18th May.

Their band, Incipit, spent a whole term writing an original song and performed at the Auckland Girls' Grammar School auditorium.

It was a fun and valuable experience, allowing them to listen to various genres of music, from pop to heavy metal, and learn from other high school students.

From Worm Bins and Workshops to becoming a Composting Community!

GBHS is excited to see the installation of a CarbonCycle Composting scheme getting underway, with the first sod being turned today!

Fiona Drummond (pictured left in 1st image) and a group of L2 Construction students are getting stuck in, and are looking forward to working with local stakeholders and our school-wide community to minimise food waste.

Level 1 Engineering students are literally meeting the brief; becoming well-balanced, sturdy engineers, combining practical and theory course skills to create a high-quality outcome!

The L1 Engineering course at GBHS combines basic skills and knowledge. The National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is an introductory qualification for secondary students interested in Mechanical Engineering.

For some, it may be the creativity and practical aspect they enjoy most, for others it may be a pathway for pursuing a career in Maintenance, General Engineering, Marine and Fabrication, or Machining and Tool Making.

Whatever the reason, there is some amazing work being constructed!

Year 7 and 8 students from neighbouring Green Bay (Primary/Intermediate) School are coming to the end of their first rotation of Technology classes - held at Green Bay High School.

During their Visual Art classes, the students have been creating Monsters inspired by Artist Jacque Davis, and used the design process to develop their ideas, practised tonal painting techniques and learnt how to layer paint with different processes such as scraping, stencilling and using paint pens for patterns and fine details.

The Year 8s also developed their construction and problem-solving skills by trying out ways to make their Monsters stand up!

A group of GBHS Scholarship English students attended the Auckland Writers' Festival 'school day' at Aotea Centre, yesterday - a chance for schools to get a peek before the public!

After listening to inspiring talks from four writers, Elizabeth Acevedo (United States: Multi-award-winning international writer and slam poet), Steph Matuku (NZ Award-winning author and screenwriter), Rachael King (NZ Award-winning author and former literary festival director), and Airana Ngarewa (NZ's No. 1 charts best-selling author and educator).

Students made the most of having the opportunity to ask authors questions - and get books signed.

This was a great experience for the students - and teachers alike!

Kia ora community, AT Transport has provided the following information:

No Pedestrian/Cycle Access through Scenic Drive Closure Titirangi 7am-5pm Thursday 16 and Friday 17 May.

Woodlands Park Road to Titirangi Roundabout Closure.

Please note the pedestrian access will be unavailable through the site tomorrow and Friday. AT will be working on the culverts through the road, and these extend through the walkway.

Before and after work hours, pedestrian and cycle access will be available.

For these two days, please use Kohu Road as an alternative pedestrian and cycle route.

Traffic management staff have also been letting people know as they have walked through the site.

Hanga-Aro-Rau Senior Pathways Advisor, Beth Nalter, facilitated an insightful careers event at GBHS for Year 13 Vocational Studies students last week.

The panel of volunteers included Paul White: Manager of Māori Outcomes - Ports of Auckland; Zen Ogiyama: NZ Customs Junior - Rocket Freight; Reagan Morta: Talent Acquisition Partner - The Warehouse Group; Jaxon Neale: Shipping Specialist - Willship International Ltd; Julie Palmer: Account Manager - Cosco Shipping Lines NZ Ltd; Karl Middleton: Transport Manager - Reliable Transport.

Hanga-Aro-Rau work with industry and employers to understand skills needed in the workforce. This information is passed on to education and training providers.

Many of you may remember Beth during her time working at GBHS as a Careers Councillor. Beth is following her passion to ensure relevant learning programmes and skills address future workforce needs.

This session allowed volunteers within the logistics industry to show a wide range of pathways available, that for the most part, is not always visible as a direct pathway from school.

SIBLING SUCCESS: Amazing achievement for brother and sister in the recent Rotorua 10km race (Saturday 4 May) with a club 1st place result!

Maksis Maulvurfs (Year 13) and his sister Sofia Maulvurfs (Year 9) who both run for Lyndale Athletics, finished the 10km run with fantastic times, putting their club's team on the winners podium and also placing 3rd (males) and 2nd (females) overall, out of 100's of runners entered.

Maksis completed the 10km race with a time of 36min 54 sec, and Sofia completed the 10km race with 40min 29 sec. Amazing!

The Rotorua Marathon Go Media 10km race, starts in the Government Gardens, winds through the volcanic Sulphur Flats, down Titokorangi Drive (Long Mile) next to the Redwoods within the Whakarewarewa Forest, and then returns to the finish at Government Gardens.

REMINDER: GBHS will be closing at the earlier time of 12 noon TODAY (Wednesday 15 May), as Green Bay High School teachers will be attending a Paid Union Meeting.

Buses are NOT able to come at the earlier time, however, the school library will be open and available for students who need to remain on-site and be supervised.

GBHS's teams are starting their winter season of sport this week and yet again we have increased the number of teams competing due to the demand from students.

GBHS Level 2 and Level 3 Art History students visited the Auckland City Art Gallery yesterday, to select works for their Personal Response assessments and to see the Early Modernism Artworks donated to the Gallery as part of the Robinson Collection. Finishing the day with a tour of Public Artworks within the City.

Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness.

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink. It’s about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background.

Pink Shirt Day is the day Aotearoa comes together to take a stand against bullying. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHFNZ) has run the campaign since 2012, inspiring tangata to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation with support from InsideOUT, the Peace Foundation, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA), Te Kaha O Te Rangatahi Indigenous Youth Hub, the Human Rights Commission, Bullying-Free NZ Week, Cook Islands Development Agency and Asian Family Services.

By donating to Pink Shirt Day, you are supporting the MHFNZ to reduce bullying; through raising awareness about bullying prevention, funding education workshops, and supplying thousands of free resources that promote inclusive workplaces, schools, and communities.

Year 13 Student Leaders Bailey Newman and Olivia Tukia are proud to promote Green Bay High School as one of the collection points for the Give A Kid A Blanket Winter Appeal.

As part of their school Service Council responsibilities, Bailey and Olivia lead by example and actively work towards promoting manaakitanga to show kindness, respect, and support to effect positive change. Give A Kid A Blanket distributes donated items to those in need, working alongside local health and social agencies including Police, Public Health Nurses, Community and Social workers.

Pre-loved (or new) items that are in clean and good condition can be dropped off the GBHS's main office, or to our Student Services reception. Items may include new and excellent condition pre-loved blankets, duvets, sleeping bags, jumpers, beanies, socks ... think about what makes you warm and cosy and share the love!

Give a Kid a Blanket has launched its winter appeal to help keep families warm across Tāmaki Makaurau, and is a Community Activated Art Action conceived and led by artists Donna Turtle Sarten & Bernie Harfleet, situated in the Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson.

Bailey and Olivia will take all donated items collected from Green Bay High School's community directly to the Give A Kid A Blanket 'warehouse' to see first-hand the scope of demand and need.

Collected items will be boxed up and taken at the end of Term 2/Week 6 (Friday 7 June, 2024).

The confidence and self-esteem levels of Year 12 students Tasmin Roberts, and Lachlan Rodden, have soared to new heights after completing a 21-Day Outward Bound (Mind, Body, Soul) course.

The MBS course promotes independence and leadership qualities, with participants completing a variety of outdoor challenges while being 'off-grid' without a cellphone - giving students time to 'disconnect to reconnect' to the world around them.

"Definite highlights were sailing and hiking in the Marlborough Sounds," says Lachlan, "And taking my turn as Captain of the ship, giving commands and making sure we were going in the right direction!"

Part of the Mind, Body, Soul experience is having a positive mindset to take on new challenges with a range of activities such as sailing, rock climbing and abseiling to tramping and solo camping.

Overcoming physical and emotional challenges and expecting the unexpected were all part of the 'adventure'.

Each morning began with a 3km run and 6am swim before each group was given their instructions for the day.

"Spending the night in the bush, all alone, with just a ground sheet and a fly (for cover) was something else!" says Tasmin, who loved every minute of the MBS Outward Bound experience, and has already started looking into going on an upcoming Spirit of Adventure course.

Year 9 students are putting their best foot forward during ROUNDERS' DAY to beat the chill, with a stunning blue sky backdrop.

Linked to the Year 9 Physical Education course, GBHS's Rounders' Day is the perfect opportunity for students to develop communication skills (listening and speaking), leadership, and teamwork while demonstrating fair play and resilience.

Students will develop their batting skills and fielding techniques, and support peers with coaching and umpiring while understanding the physical, mental, and social health benefits of playing rounders.

House Points are also awarded for school spirit, best dressed, top class etc.

Tomorrow's guest speaker is a local DOCTOR!

GBHS Careers Department warmly invites students to come along to “Kawhe & Kōrero” sessions, held every Tuesday at lunchtime in the Mana Tangata building.

Free hot drinks available!

Come along and ask about the type of skills, study and expectations that are required to follow this career pathway.

During the Kawhe & Kōrero sessions, students will get to meet people from different industries, and ask plenty of questions.

Come along and hear about a range of careers, and different paths people take to get into their roles, useful experience and/or qualifications ... and the best and worst parts of their jobs.

Kia ora community, AT Transport has provided the following information:

No Pedestrian/Cycle Access through Scenic Drive Closure Titirangi 7am-5pm Thursday 16 and Friday 17 May.

Woodlands Park Road to Titirangi Roundabout Closure.

Please note the pedestrian access will be unavailable through the site tomorrow and Friday. AT will be working on the culverts through the road, and these extend through the walkway.

Before and after work hours, pedestrian and cycle access will be available.

For these two days, please use Kohu Road as an alternative pedestrian and cycle route.

Traffic management staff have also been letting people know as they have walked through the site.

Wednesday May 15th

Hanga-Aro-Rau Senior Pathways Advisor, Beth Nalter, facilitated an insightful careers event at GBHS for Year 13 Vocational Studies students last week.

The panel of volunteers included Paul White: Manager of Māori Outcomes - Ports of Auckland; Zen Ogiyama: NZ Customs Junior - Rocket Freight; Reagan Morta: Talent Acquisition Partner - The Warehouse Group; Jaxon Neale: Shipping Specialist - Willship International Ltd; Julie Palmer: Account Manager - Cosco Shipping Lines NZ Ltd; Karl Middleton: Transport Manager - Reliable Transport.

Hanga-Aro-Rau work with industry and employers to understand skills needed in the workforce. This information is passed on to education and training providers.

Many of you may remember Beth during her time working at GBHS as a Careers Councillor. Beth is following her passion to ensure relevant learning programmes and skills address future workforce needs.

This session allowed volunteers within the logistics industry to show a wide range of pathways available, that for the most part, is not always visible as a direct pathway from school.

Wednesday May 15th

SIBLING SUCCESS: Amazing achievement for brother and sister in the recent Rotorua 10km race (Saturday 4 May) with a club 1st place result!

Maksis Maulvurfs (Year 13) and his sister Sofia Maulvurfs (Year 9) who both run for Lyndale Athletics, finished the 10km run with fantastic times, putting their club's team on the winners podium and also placing 3rd (males) and 2nd (females) overall, out of 100's of runners entered.

Maksis completed the 10km race with a time of 36min 54 sec, and Sofia completed the 10km race with 40min 29 sec. Amazing!

The Rotorua Marathon Go Media 10km race, starts in the Government Gardens, winds through the volcanic Sulphur Flats, down Titokorangi Drive (Long Mile) next to the Redwoods within the Whakarewarewa Forest, and then returns to the finish at Government Gardens.

REMINDER: GBHS will be closing at the earlier time of 12 noon TODAY (Wednesday 15 May), as Green Bay High School teachers will be attending a Paid Union Meeting.

Buses are NOT able to come at the earlier time, however, the school library will be open and available for students who need to remain on-site and be supervised.

GBHS Level 2 and Level 3 Art History students visited the Auckland City Art Gallery yesterday, to select works for their Personal Response assessments and to see the Early Modernism Artworks donated to the Gallery as part of the Robinson Collection. Finishing the day with a tour of Public Artworks within the City.

Next Friday (17 May 2024) is Pink Shirt Day - please note: this is NOT a mufti day, however, students can choose to wear a PINK SHIRT with their uniform and/or accessorise the uniform with Pink items for the day.

Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness.

Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink. It’s about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background.

Pink Shirt Day is the day Aotearoa comes together to take a stand against bullying. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHFNZ) has run the campaign since 2012, inspiring tangata to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Pink Shirt Day is led by the Mental Health Foundation with support from InsideOUT, the Peace Foundation, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA), Te Kaha O Te Rangatahi Indigenous Youth Hub, the Human Rights Commission, Bullying-Free NZ Week, Cook Islands Development Agency and Asian Family Services.

By donating to Pink Shirt Day, you are supporting the MHFNZ to reduce bullying; through raising awareness about bullying prevention, funding education workshops, and supplying thousands of free resources that promote inclusive workplaces, schools, and communities.

Year 13 Student Leaders Bailey Newman and Olivia Tukia are proud to promote Green Bay High School as one of the collection points for the Give A Kid A Blanket Winter Appeal.

As part of their school Service Council responsibilities, Bailey and Olivia lead by example and actively work towards promoting manaakitanga to show kindness, respect, and support to effect positive change. Give A Kid A Blanket distributes donated items to those in need, working alongside local health and social agencies including Police, Public Health Nurses, Community and Social workers.

Pre-loved (or new) items that are in clean and good condition can be dropped off the GBHS's main office, or to our Student Services reception. Items may include new and excellent condition pre-loved blankets, duvets, sleeping bags, jumpers, beanies, socks ... think about what makes you warm and cosy and share the love!

Give a Kid a Blanket has launched its winter appeal to help keep families warm across Tāmaki Makaurau, and is a Community Activated Art Action conceived and led by artists Donna Turtle Sarten & Bernie Harfleet, situated in the Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson.

Bailey and Olivia will take all donated items collected from Green Bay High School's community directly to the Give A Kid A Blanket 'warehouse' to see first-hand the scope of demand and need.

Collected items will be boxed up and taken at the end of Term 2/Week 6 (Friday 7 June, 2024).

Thursday May 9th

The confidence and self-esteem levels of Year 12 students Tasmin Roberts, and Lachlan Rodden, have soared to new heights after completing a 21-Day Outward Bound (Mind, Body, Soul) course.

The MBS course promotes independence and leadership qualities, with participants completing a variety of outdoor challenges while being 'off-grid' without a cellphone - giving students time to 'disconnect to reconnect' to the world around them.

"Definite highlights were sailing and hiking in the Marlborough Sounds," says Lachlan, "And taking my turn as Captain of the ship, giving commands and making sure we were going in the right direction!"

Part of the Mind, Body, Soul experience is having a positive mindset to take on new challenges with a range of activities such as sailing, rock climbing and abseiling to tramping and solo camping.

Overcoming physical and emotional challenges and expecting the unexpected were all part of the 'adventure'.

Each morning began with a 3km run and 6am swim before each group was given their instructions for the day.

"Spending the night in the bush, all alone, with just a ground sheet and a fly (for cover) was something else!" says Tasmin, who loved every minute of the MBS Outward Bound experience, and has already started looking into going on an upcoming Spirit of Adventure course.

Wednesday May 8th

Year 9 students are putting their best foot forward during ROUNDERS' DAY to beat the chill, with a stunning blue sky backdrop.

Linked to the Year 9 Physical Education course, GBHS's Rounders' Day is the perfect opportunity for students to develop communication skills (listening and speaking), leadership, and teamwork while demonstrating fair play and resilience.

Students will develop their batting skills and fielding techniques, and support peers with coaching and umpiring while understanding the physical, mental, and social health benefits of playing rounders.

House Points are also awarded for school spirit, best dressed, top class etc.

GBHS Careers Department warmly invites students to come along to “Kawhe & Kōrero” sessions, held every Tuesday at lunchtime in the Mana Tangata building.

Free hot drinks available!

Come along and ask about the type of skills, study and expectations that are required to follow this career pathway.

During the Kawhe & Kōrero sessions, students will get to meet people from different industries, and ask plenty of questions.

Come along and hear about a range of careers, and different paths people take to get into their roles, useful experience and/or qualifications ... and the best and worst parts of their jobs.
