CAA Literacy and Numeracy

Common Assessment Activity (CAA) Digital Exams

Taking place next week (21 - 23 May 2024). CAA exams are an important time for selected Years 11-13 students, and is also the first opportunity for Year 10 students to sit these exams. Students have been well supported in class:

Year 10s have created their NCEA student login (and/or) logged into their account - and have also been practising exam questions in classes.
Years 11-13 students were encouraged to order workbooks and have completed several workshops for Reading/Writing/Numeracy (held on Wednesday 1 May, Wednesday 8 May, and Wednesday 15 May).

On the Day - Exam Preparation:

Arrive early! (see information in Room Allocation/s below)
In the morning of the exam check B block white board for Reading & Writing and F block white board for Numeracy to confirm room allocations
While some students may complete their exam before the end of the session, students must stay in their exam room until the end of the session
We encourage students to use the full 2 hrs
After each exam students will continue with their timetable classes

Ake Ake Ake - A FOREVER LANGUAGE
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of this country.

The theme for Te Wiki 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future.

Under enduring pressure, te reo Māori has shown it will adapt and survive. It grows with our people, our culture and our environment.

Green Bay High School has some amazing rangitahi about to make their mark on the world.

Year 13 students Aedan Doorley, Miller Van Sambeek, Max Marvin and Hailey Helwes, were invited by YES (Young Enterprise Scheme) to attend the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame gala on Wednesday night. (Pictured with Business Studies teacher, Debbie Keymer).

The NZ BHoF evening was a night of celebration, stories and inspiration from some of NZ’s most outstanding business leaders. The evening sparked inspiration, helping our ākonga navigate their pathways within the New Zealand business world.

Inspiring stories of the seven 2024 Laureates were heard - stories of enterprise, hard work, and success. Most have also contributed generously to their communities.

The New Zealand Business Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates individuals who have made a significant contribution to the economic and social development of New Zealand.

New Zealand International Biology Olympiad team:

A huuuuge congratulations to Lukáš Correll-Trnka (Year 12) from Green Bay High School who has been successful in passing the first entrance exam for the NZIBO (International Biology Olympiad) team.

This entrance exam was open to all senior Biology students throughout New Zealand.

We are very pleased to announce that Lukáš (who was the only entrant from our school (due to late notice and sports camps etc) has made it through to the next stage!

This is a phenomenal opportunity - just making it past the entrance exam is something to be extremely proud of! The exam is very challenging, requiring lots of lateral thinking and the application of biological concepts to new contexts.

Lukáš finished amongst the top 240 students in the country and has now been invited to join a tutorial programme where he will spend the next few months learning, discussing, and being assessed on a wide range of biology topics.

This will culminate in a selection exam on the 26 February 2025, whereby the top 20-25 in this exam take part in a residential Practical Training Camp during the April (2025) school holidays. The top four of the camp will represent New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad, to be held in the Philippines in July next year.

GBHS had some great results from the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee event held on Sunday (Olivia Woolford Yr 12 was set to compete on Saturday, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to illness).

Jack Hansen (Yr 13) had a nail-biting final, after leading most of the way he narrowly lost, finishing in 2nd place in the NZ Secondary School Individual Epee. Jack knocked James MacDonald (Yr 12) out in another close match (15 - 14) and was also on the podium in 3rd= place.

Travis West-Hill (Yr 12) finished 10th in the 32-strong field, with Braden Clemmett (Yr 12) in 24th and Matias Ureta (Yr 10) in 27th place respectively.

Jack, James, Travis and Braden also qualified for a spot in the team's competition, placing GBHS in 3rd place!

Senior students (Years 11, 12, 13) will be on STUDY LEAVE from Tuesday 10th September - Friday 20th September 2024 - and are expected to be at school for their exam/s only, returning to a normal school timetable on Monday 23 September 2024.

Year 11 and Year 12 students are to wear the school uniform when sitting exams and attending workshops.

U85 RUGBY FINAL:

GBHS's U85 Boys' rugby team has had an incredible season, standing their ground in the finals against Auckland Grammar!

Proud coach Aaron Harris has nothing but praise for the boys whose commitment and dedication, both on and off the field, shone through.

With the half-time score sitting at 10-3 to Grammar, our boys gave it their all to ensure Grammar did not break GBHS's defence.

Tom Hansen's try, and a penalty kick by Liam Chisholm brought the game within a 2-point margin, leaving players and supporters (from both sides) in nervous anticipation - with the possibility of GBHS storming ahead.

Both teams dug in but were unable to score again, and the final whistle went at 10-8, leaving AGS the winners of the 2024 U85 championship.

Well done to both teams, for an exceptional game.

Special mention to Year 13 students Vincent Brodie, Max Marvin, Ollie Callagher, Jahkoby Mataupu, Ryan Eade, Harry Milner, and Lucas Harvey who have helped to create a culture of school pride, sportsmanship, and leadership - throughout their participation in secondary school sports.

It's great to see GBHS moving up the rugby ranks and leaving a lasting impression!

HUMBLE HERCULEAN: Alex Suddens (Year 12) is sporting a subtle change to his usual belt today, having WON the recent NAGA Championships (North American Grappling Association) in Las Vegas!

Alex won the NAGA championship belt for his no-gi division, going up in weight to 69kg and also placed second in the 69kg Gi division.

A very humble Alex travelled with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team, Tukaha.

Well done, Alex, this is an awesome achievement!

SIGHTS SET ON SPAIN: Congratulations to Japanese International student Anna Hashimoto (Year 12) who has been selected as a scholarship recipient of the Language School Dice Español in Salamanca, Spain!

GBHS Spanish Language teacher, Ana Pascual Rodriguez, says Anna is a worthy recipient and was very pleased to offer this opportunity to her students, in collaboration with Dice Español and the Junta of Castilla y León.

Leaving in January next year, Anna looks forward to living with her host family as part of the immersion experience, seeking to learn and improve her Spanish language while also taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Spanish culture.

Salamanca is a famous university city well attended to those seeking to learn and to improve their Spanish.

GBHS's Language Faculty encourages all students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities and events offered throughout the year to develop their language skills, make long lasting friendships with like minded students and grow culturally.

Who will win this year's Can Drive competition?

Green Bay High School's Service Council (student leadership group) are organising this year's annual Can Drive, in support of Vision West. Students are encouraged to bring cans of food into their form class (or) to drop them off at the school Library.

This is a great way for our GBHS school community to support people in need across the wider community.

Remember every can = 5 house points!

All items will be donated to Vision West. The appeal ends this Friday 6th September.

The Can Drive House competition tally (so far) shows Anawhata currently sitting in 1st place, Whatipu 2nd, Piha 3rd, Muriwai 4th, and Karekare 5th.

A group of staff and students are showing their solidarity for Kiwis living with blood cancer who may lose their hair through chemotherapy treatment by committing to fundraise for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand and shaving for a cure.

NZSS Winter Tournament Week: 2-8 September 2024

Winter Sports is coming to the end of its season, and what better way to celebrate and recognise our teams' efforts than representing GBHS in the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Winter Tournament Week!

GBHS Sports Department would like to take this opportunity to thank all coaches of our winter teams whose seasons have now come to an end. Without their valued support, volunteering their time, our students would not have the opportunities to compete in their chosen sports.

GBHS is moving up the ranks!

Mathex is a challenging mathematics contest where schools from across Auckland compete against each other in teams to answer questions as quickly as possible, with 20 questions completed in 30 minutes.

The atmosphere was energetic! Held at the Barfoot and Thompson stadium, on Wednesday evening (21 August 2024) with over 60 secondary schools taking part.

Our teams put in an amazing effort:
• Year 9 team scored 55 out of 100. Ranked 7th place (tied with other schools). Congratulations to: Jibriil Omar, Henry Klimetz, Lewis Robinson, Jack Wilkinson.
• Year 10 team scored 85 out of 100.Congratulations to: Ryan Lott, Juliette Colquhoun, Michael Zuo, Vidusha Jayasinghe.

It was great to see so many parents, whānau, and teacher supporters watching from the stands as teams worked together, to problem-solve and answer questions.

Upon completing the answer, the team 'runner' literally sprints to the judging table and waits for the 'thumbs up' for a correct answer. If the answer is incorrect, the runner frantically makes their way back to the team, who has to resolve the question. If the answer is correct, the runner brings back the next question to the team ... then runs the answer back to the judges. Making for a fun, frantic event!

C#, C++, Java and Python = Single Success!

Congratulations to Lucas West (Year 11) who participated in the New Zealand Programming Contest held on Saturday, 17 August 2024, at Auckland University.

Despite his two teammates dropping out for various reasons, Lucas was undeterred and competed solo.

The contest featured problems worth 3, 10, 30, and 100 points.

Lucas first tackled a 10-point problem and then solved a 3-point problem.

To solve a problem, a team (or in this case, Lucas) has to write a solution in one of the available languages (usually C#, C++, Java and Python) and submit it to the automatic judging system.

Lucas performed admirably and expressed satisfaction with his performance, describing the experience as rewarding and valuable.

Youth Without Borders Camp
20th - 25th of January 2025

IGNITE is a New Zealand-based programme under the international not-for-profit organization Youth Without Borders (YWB).

For the last 10 years, Youth Without Borders has successfully been running a series of engineering camps in Australia designed to allow high school students to attend a hands-on camp in the summer holidays. In 2022 we ran the first camp in New Zealand as IGNITE.

Due to its success in past years, IGNITE will be running the camp again this coming summer in 2025. The IGNITE Engineering Camp is specifically aimed towards students who may face barriers to transition from high school to tertiary education. All expenses paid - including transportation if needed.

The camp will take place at the University of Auckland from the 20th - 25th of January 2025. For more information please see attached the information booklet and poster. The information booklet contains links to our social media pages and website.

Applications are OPEN NOW and closes on the 8th of September 2024. Each student will need to submit their completed student application AND be nominated by a teacher or another adult through the nominators form.

Youth Search & Rescue 2025 Programme Applications Now Open!

Applications for the Youth Search and Rescue program are now open for students aged 14 to 16, with the deadline for applications being 30 September 2024.

Youth Search and Rescue (YSAR) is a 3-year program that combines weekly classroom-style learning with weekend adventure-based education in the outdoors to apply the new skills acquired.

YSAR train, mentor, and develop rangatahi to become the next generation of Search and Rescue and Emergency Management volunteers.

YSAR are recognised as the future workforce youth development training organisation for national search and rescue and emergency response in New Zealand.
Students will gain:
• Outdoor education skills, survival, leadership, and team capability and confidence
• STEM competencies and NZQA qualifications to complement in-classroom learning
• Opportunities for community engagement and contribution, either voluntary or career
• Achievement of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards
• Advanced environmental sustainability and flora and fauna awareness

GBHS's Surf Team were ready to drop into the North Island Secondary School Champs this week, held in Raglan.

Raglan's conditions put our team to the test, facing challenging circumstances and charging through some exceptionally big set waves, unfortunately not progressing through to the final rounds but doing GBHS proud nonetheless.

This year the competition was held in two parts - the first being a multiple-choice and short answer exam sat entirely online, followed by a paper exam limited to the top 15 percent of participants in the first part. The University of Otago Junior Maths Competition is for students in Years 9 to 11 with the emphasis on problem-solving. Textbooks are not allowed, although calculators can be used.

Olivia Tukia and Bailey Newman (Year 13 Student Council leaders) are organising this year's annual Can Drive, in support of Vision West.

Students are encouraged to bring cans of food into their form class (or) to drop them off at the school Library. This is a great way for our GBHS school community to support people in need across the wider community.

Thank you, Oliva and Bailey, for getting this initiative started. The Can Drive appeal will take place for the next few weeks (Weeks 5,6,7 of term 3). All items will be donated to Vision Week on Friday 6 September.
