Curriculum Refresh (Part 2)

The New Zealand Curriculum guides what schools teach in our country.
Why do we offer NCEA Level 1?
Green Bay High School offers students the opportunity to achieve each of NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3. Some schools across New Zealand opt to not provide NCEA Level 1, but we value it as a qualification and are excited about the changes taking place.
NCEA Level 1 offers broad, coherent, foundational learning, which allows for specialisation at NCEA Level 2. We know our young people are not always in a position to make long-term career pathway decisions at the age of 15 - NCEA Level 1 keeps students’ options open and acts as a base qualification for any academic or vocational pathways. Additionally, NCEA Level 1 provides our Year 11 students with experience of the same systems, assessment styles and examination processes that they will encounter in Years 12 and 13.
What do all the changes mean for me?
The phased approach to implementing Te Mātaiaho and the NCEA Change Programme means that students of different ages will enjoy different experiences of school over the next few years. At appropriate times through the process, Green Bay High School will host whānau information sessions at school where clear details will be provided as to the next steps in the journey.
Maintaining communication and connection with the school and with your children will continue to be a key role of whānau throughout their time at Green Bay High School. The following questions are examples of discussion-starters that can be used with your children: What are you interested in doing when you leave school? (https://www.careers.govt.nz/)
- What are your favourite subjects?
- Do you know how you are progressing?
- Are there any assessments coming up that you’re worried about?
One thing that will be happening over the next term is a Course Review of what is provided at Green Bay High School. A key intent of the NCEA Change Programme is to provide coherent pathways, and we want to ensure that is honoured in the subjects we offer. We will be sending out a survey to our staff, students and whānau asking for your opinions about the pathways we provide and the important learning that cannot be left to chance. Please take some to fill out the survey when it drops into your inbox.
What will NCEA requirements look like for my child?
