Impacts of historical injustices:
Tauira in GBHS's Te Reo Māori, and Te Ahi Kā classes went to Te Pou Theatre, in Henderson, earlier this week, to watch the play ‘The Handlers' a play that delves into themes of cultural identity and the impacts of historical injustices on indigenous communities.
The play is based on a whānau of Māori women working at the Crown Lynn factory take time off work to attend a tangihanga and putting their jobs on the line when production line grinds to a halt.
For Māori and Pasifika tauira, this play can be an invaluable educational experience that supplements and enriches their understanding of their own heritage as well as the broader social and historical context in which it exists. For non-Māori, the play can offer an insight into the experiences and perspective of indigenous communities.
“The Handlers” explores themes that are deeply relevant to Te Ao Māori and Pasifika tauira, such as cultural preservation and the ongoing struggle for indigenous rights. By witnessing these themes portrayed on stage, tauira can engage with complex issues that directly impact their communities, fostering a deeper understanding of their own cultural identity and the challenges faced by indigenous people globally.
This trip provided a valuable opportunity for our Māori and Pasifika tauira to engage with cultural themes and perspectives in a meaningful way, enhancing their educational experience and contributing to their academic growth.
