AFTER SCHOOL SESSIONS:
Green Bay High School is pleased to work alongside Quintin Derham, who has run self-defence classes across the community for some time to organise an after-school Self-Defence course, planned for term 3.
This is in response to the increase in reports of students who have experienced threatening and violent behaviour while out and about in the community.
- There will be one 60-minute session per week planned for eight weeks from 3.30pm - 4.30pm.
- This 8-week Self-Defence course will cost $40.
- The amount will be added to your child’s school account upon registration.
- Those who register must be committed to attending each session.
- No refunds will be given.
To help us establish preferred dates and times, please fill out this Google Form to register your interest. Spaces may be limited, therefore your response will help us to decide on a venue and start date, and get the registration process underway.
What will the Self-Defence course involve?
Focusing on the physical aspect of self-defence, these classes will also cover the mindset needed for dealing with challenging situations and include:
Health & Safety / Foundations: A brief discussion about the risks involved in Martial arts training. Stressing the importance of discipline, awareness of space and control of technique and power.
Preparation Exercises:
- Exercises focusing on full-body motion, including breath work
- Breakfalls and Getting Back on Your Feet: Learn how to land on the ground with minimal risk of injury and return to a standing guard position
- Guard Stances and Body Shifting: Protect your body using your arms as shields and cover vital points; Move into safe positions, change angles, and maintain balance and stability while in motion
Situational Awareness: Understand the importance of focus, awareness, and trusting your instincts Basic Strikes and Kicks for Self Defence: Develop offensive skills as a last resort, prioritising peace and personal safety; Utilize the body’s natural weapons (elbows, hammer fist, palm heel, and knees)
Each session will conclude with a short debrief, discussion and Q&A, along with a preview of the next session. Students will be encouraged to practice for their health, wellness, and skills acquisition.
