Kāhui Ako/Communities of Learning

A Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako is a group of education and training providers that form around children and young people's learning pathways, and work together to help them achieve their full potential.

Our Kāhui Ako

Green Bay High School is part of the 'Kōtuitui' Kāhui Ako. Kōtuitui is a collaborative relationship between twelve local schools creating a learning community.

Our community is located on the edge of the Waitakere Ranges, with much of its hinterland being native bush reserve which flows down to Auckland's west coast beaches and Manukau Harbour. On our eastern boundary we connect with the rapidly growing and vibrant urban area of New Lynn. The majority of our students come from the suburbs of Titirangi, Green Bay and Glen Eden, the semi-rural and bush reserve areas of Laingholm and Huia, and the fringe of New Lynn. Consequently our community reflects the wide range of demographic and socio-economic diversity that is one of the defining characteristics of Auckland.

Being motivated by a sense of community is central to the success of building a strongly connected Kāhui Ako. The vision of Kōtuitui is to 'Lift aspirations and raise educational achievement for every learner in our community. It is clear that effective and focused collaboration between leaders, teachers and learners will reap many benefits for our broader community as a whole.

Kōtuitui

Reaching 7,052 students, our community drives forward learning delivering results for students, parents and teachers alike.

It is an exciting and invigorating time for the Kōtuitui Kāhui Ako in West Auckland. Both Across School leader and In School teacher roles have led to an increased level of collaborative practice between school leaders and teachers. There is an awareness that the quality of teacher collaboration positively influences teacher performance and student achievement.

The central vision for the Kōtuitui Kāhui Ako is to create a powerful educational research and development network, focused on meeting local learning needs. As educators, we must always be curious and engaged in the puzzle of what works best for learning. Personal, professional, and collective responsibility for continuous improvement is essential to our work.

Collaborating across the 12 schools in our community means a greater focus on the whole learning pathway of learners in our Kōtuitui community. It signals stronger bonds between educational contexts which will lead to greater long term support for our learners as they transition from one learning environment to the next.

The Kōtuitui Feathers

Design

Each feather is subtly different in its design reflecting both the diversity of the community and the varying styles of our learners. Additionally, the design reflects the concept of many ideas coming together from different sources, which instrinsically links to the nature of research and development within inquiry.

Pattern

The use of symmetry in the detail across the feathers reflects a woven pattern, which is to say a network of elements that are intertwined, woven or bound togther to form a whole.

Orientation

The feathers are in an upright position pointing downwards to reflect how they might be bound to a Māori cloak. The vertical alignment is also suggestive of people standing next to one another, forming the basis of a community.

Network Node

Each feather stem features a small hollow circle at the top which represents the connectivity potential of the feather. Networks are a series of interconnected nodes and each node contributes to the network as a whole.
