School-wide Term 3 celebration assemblies will be held tomorrow Friday, 22nd September (last day of term 3) in the school Gymnasium. This is a friendly reminder that school finishes for everyone at 3.15pm.

Getting Workforce Ready: A select group of Year 12 and Year 13 students took part in a 1-day Forklift Licensing course yesterday, with theory and practical-based forklift training provided by the TSS group.

As part of the TSS Group of companies (TSS Workforce, TSS Training & TSS Managed Services) TSS provides forklift training for beginners and renewal of forklift certification for experienced operators.

Ending Term 3 with a Bang!

Green Bay High School's Level 3 Drama students were very proud to share with friends and whānau their interpretation of the award-winning NZ script ‘Wheeler's Luck’. We acknowledge the permission given by Playmarket NZ to perform this.

As you would expect, there were some mature themes and language but all was done with some great comical timing - leaving the audience laughing out loud.

Congratulations to this set of drama students in particular, who have worked hard over the last few years to keep their performance skills alive no matter what Covid and other disruptions were thrown at them.

The Performing Arts Department is immensely proud of their journey and the resilience they have shown. Held over two glorious nights (20 and 21 September) this has been the perfect way to bring their Drama journey at GBHS to an end with a bang!

Teaching the Teachers: Student SAGA Leaders held an informative Professional Learning session with staff earlier this week to talk about what it means to be an LGBTQ+ student at Green Bay High School.

The first step to affirming diversity is to create visibility and promote awareness.

Green Bay High School creates an inclusive environment, free of discrimination, to enable students to feel physically and emotionally safe - supporting the academic achievement and well-being of all students.

Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua: I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past.

The whakataukī or 'proverb' seen above speaks to Māori perspectives of time, where the past, the present, and the future are viewed as intertwined, and life is seen as a part of a continuous process.

Green Bay High School's Year 10 Young Writers class has been studying a unit of work entitled: 'I am My Ancestors' Child.'

Students have been investigating the concept of 'whakapapa' and using this knowledge to create poetry based on their own whakapapa and have written on a variety of topics such as their countries of origin, cultural stories and practices, and also the idea of lineage and ancestry. Many students showed a real appreciation of how the present is informed by a deeper understanding of the past.

The class has donated their published 'Whakapapa Poetry' book to the school library - complete with front cover artistry created by Lucy Walker (K10PAR).

Check out this wonderful piece of mahi, which can be easily accessed in the student creation section of the school library.

Skillful synchronisation, white water, and rafting rapids certainly put our Level 2 PEO students through the wringer yesterday, as they tested their teamwork and leadership skills at WERO Whitewater Park in Manukau.

With lots of challenges and personal goals set in place, students worked well to conquer the 5m waterfall and make it to the end of the course with everyone onboard (although there were several 'man overboard' moments)! Thankfully it was a stunningly sunny day to speed up the drying time.

This was such a great way to end the term. Bring on next term!

LOSING THEIR LOCKS: Green Bay High School students have raised over $13,000 towards the 2023 Shave For A Cure / Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand fundraiser.

A huuuuge shout-out to Cohen Wing, our professional barber (and past pupil) who donated his time to ensure our brave students came away with a clean (and tidy) crew cut!

In 2024, Green Bay High School will be part of the Auckland Schools' Teacher Training Programme (ASTTP), in partnership with the University of Waikato. The programme is completed in one year, spent with experienced mentors, and is an excellent opportunity for people in our local community. Trainee teachers will also attend remote lectures and complete assignments for Waikato University.

If successful, you will join Green Bay High School as a member of staff for the full year while completing your teaching practice amongst teaching professionals, whilst earning a Diploma of Teaching from the University of Waikato. This is the first step in becoming a fully registered teacher.

You will be working with the teachers at Green Bay High School as well as given an opportunity to visit other schools during the course of the year.

Selected work by Green Bay High School's Fashion & Design, and Technology students are taking centre stage in Lynmall! Featuring the wonderful design work of some of our very talented students: Tom Anderson, Sian Hughes, Florence Tyler, Sophia-Lei Mathews, Jemma Schnell, Miller Van Zambeek, Hannah Rajkumar, Amber Cook, Amie Haworth. The display is set up near Cotton On and No. 1 shoes and will be on for approximately two weeks. Be sure to head along and take a look!

There has been a lot of hard mahi taking place in term 3! Not only have Level 3 DVC (Design and Visual Communication) students been busy with their Practice/Derived Grade exams, but they have also been putting the final touches to their internal assessment (worth 6 credits) for their major Spatial Design projects. A range of 3-D models are presently on display in our school Auditorium foyer, offering a glimpse of what is on offer with a larger exhibition scheduled for later in the year.

During the year, L3DVC students have extensively explored the design process to creatively and clearly record the design development process of their chosen main project in detail, building upon the skills and knowledge they have learned in Level 1 and Level 2 to design and develop their own individual major project in the area of either spatial (architectural) design or product design.

It is great to see the work and attention to detail that students have been busily working towards. With Course Selection in the minds of our new Year 9 students (2024) it is timely to catch a glimpse of the amazing opportunities Green Bay High School has to offer.

Benji Godsmark (Year 10) has gone to infinity and beyond - having recently completed an intense curriculum in space exploration at the NASA Advanced Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama USA.

Held at the US Space and Rocket Center, Benji took part in aerospace technology, leadership, and team-building skills applicable to the nation's space and rocketry programmes.

Benji took part in practical astronaut training exercises, including M.A.T (Multi Access Training) to simulate re-entering into Earth's atmosphere. M.A.T tests astronauts to see how fast they can stabilise the capsule/pod as it returns to earth - ensuring astronauts are used to the conditions (and don't pass out)!

Scuba Diving can be daunting at the best of times - especially for the first time, however, this experience of weightlessness was all par for the course for Benji to feel what gravity is like in space.

Benji says one of the highlights of Space Camp was meeting Astronaut Dr. Lawrence "Larry" DeLucas, the former chief scientist of the International Space Station, who went up in the space shuttle Columbia before it was later involved in a fatal accident.

Now with his feet firmly back on the ground, Benji is looking forward to following a career path involving physics and space science and keeping in touch with friends and contacts with similar interests.

Putting her best foot forward on the campaign trail, and in the community: Green Bay High School's Annie-Rose Collins (Year 12) who was recently elected as Student Trustee (2024) on the Board of Trustees is a volunteer firefighter and medical first responder at Laingholm Fire Brigade. Earlier this week (11 September) Annie-Rose, with hundreds of other participants, ran up the Auckland Sky Tower stairwell in full firefighting kit - smashing it in a time of 16 minutes. Ka mau te wehi, Annie-Rose!

Mālō e lelei; Senior practice exams began this week and there has been an air of focus and determination across the school. For most Year 11 students, these practice exams will be their first experience of a formal exam setting and it has been great to see students well prepared, arriving on time and ready to sit their exams.

This week we had the annual election for the student representative on the Board of Trustees. I am so proud of the five students who stood for election and wanted to contribute their time and energy at Board level. Congratulations to Annie-Rose Collins who has been elected in this role, and thank you to Harrison Clark-Robinson for the fantastic job you have done over the past two years. We had a significantly higher student voting participation rate in this year's election, which was fantastic to see.

Thank you to whānau who came along to our Hui on Wednesday evening. We acknowledge your support as we work together to achieve great outcomes for our rangatahi. While sharing some great kai, we discussed our plans for next year, including Matariki and Te Ahi Kā, as well as the upcoming Derived Grade Exams.

Our next hui, to be held in Term 4 on Tuesday 21 November 2022 (tbc) will be focused on welcoming our incoming Year 8 students and their whānau during Orientation Days.

Last week's Winter tournament week brought an official end to the winter sports season, we would like to send a massive shout-out to all coaches and managers who helped our students get involved and compete throughout the season. Once again we had a record number of students competing for GBHS and a lot of this is down to our coaches and the time they give to the sports programme here at Green Bay High School. We appreciate YOU!

Student Trustee Election RESULTS: The election for this role was held on Wednesday 6 September 2023. The successful candidate was Annie-Rose Collins who got the majority of the vote. There was a huge turnout of student voters, which was evidence of the significant interest raised by the Campaign.

Congratulations to Annie-Rose who has been elected in this role and will serve as the Student Trustee on the Board in 2024. The Board looks forward to working with Annie-Rose.

The other Candidates were: Harrison Clark-Robinson, James MacDonald, Matakaea Tikao, and Olivia Tukia. They will provide Annie-Rose with any additional support that she may require throughout the rest of 2023 and into 2024. The Board would like to extend their thanks to Harrison Clark-Robinson for his contribution to the Board over the previous year.

All candidates carried out their campaign in a manner that reflected our school values and should be acknowledged as the excellent role models that they are. We thank them for their involvement in the democratic process of determining the Student Trustee.

L3 Drama students create an entire community with minimal sets and props, just pure imagination and energy. Brilliant in its simplicity, eloquent in its humor, and with its roots firmly planted in grassroots Aotearoa. As rich, wacky, perceptive, touching, and outright hilarious as a Simpsons episode, yet Kiwi to its marrow. Wheeler's Luck is pure gold.

With no props and a cast size that can range from 2 - 52 - a flexibility beloved of all those who have to cater to variably sized and skilled groups - this extraordinary play was a classic from its triumphant opening night in 2004. Since then Wheeler's Luck has been performed to acclaim both professionally as the original two-hander, and in numerous local theatres and schools with an astounding range of cast sizes and production styles.

Based on the book Wheeler's Luck: A Rural Comedy by Nigel Collins, Toby Leach, Da'Mon Andrews, is energising, hilarious, and perceptive. This beautifully written play is pure theatrical magic. NZs beloved classic comedy Wheeler's Luck is a rollicking rural saga based around the citizens of a small community that life seems to have passed by - until, that is, the town mayor plots with an Auckland developer who has plans for an exclusive multi-million dollar resort - and not everyone is happy.

The NZ Secondary Schools Wrestling Champs were held at Rutherford College last week, on the 31st of August.

Over 90 students competed from high schools from all around the country. The highest number of athletes entered this year.

Alex Suddens (Year 11) represented Green Bay High School and placed 2nd in the Senior 60kg category. Well done, Alex!

Student Trustee Elections are taking place on Wednesday 6 September.

Student Trustee Candidates Harrison Carke-Robinson, Annie-Rose Collins, James MacDonald, Matakaea Tikao, and Olivia Tukia, who are standing for the position of Board of Trustees Student Trustee (2023/2024), held a Q&A session in the B block courtyard at lunchtime today (Friday 1 September) to help peers make an informed choice when placing their vote!

Voting will be conducted electronically. Electronic voting forms will be emailed out to students on Wednesday 6 September - voting closes at 4pm that day. All students are entitled to one vote.

The voting roll is held at the school office and can be viewed during normal school hours.

GBHS students will be Shaving For A Cure! As part of the annual Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand fundraising campaign.

Skillful synchronisation, white water, and rafting rapids certainly put our Level 2 PEO students through the wringer yesterday, as they tested their teamwork and leadership skills at WERO Whitewater Park in Manukau.

With lots of challenges and personal goals set in place, students worked well to conquer the 5m waterfall and make it to the end of the course with everyone onboard (although there were several 'man overboard' moments)! Thankfully it was a stunningly sunny day to speed up the drying time.

This was such a great way to end the term. Bring on next term!

LOSING THEIR LOCKS: Green Bay High School students have raised over $13,000 towards the 2023 Shave For A Cure / Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand fundraiser.

In 2024, Green Bay High School will be part of the Auckland Schools' Teacher Training Programme (ASTTP), in partnership with the University of Waikato. The programme is completed in one year, spent with experienced mentors, and is an excellent opportunity for people in our local community. Trainee teachers will also attend remote lectures and complete assignments for Waikato University.

If successful, you will join Green Bay High School as a member of staff for the full year while completing your teaching practice amongst teaching professionals, whilst earning a Diploma of Teaching from the University of Waikato. This is the first step in becoming a fully registered teacher.

You will be working with the teachers at Green Bay High School as well as given an opportunity to visit other schools during the course of the year.

Selected work by Green Bay High School's Fashion & Design, and Technology students are taking centre stage in Lynmall! Featuring the wonderful design work of some of our very talented students: Tom Anderson, Sian Hughes, Florence Tyler, Sophia-Lei Mathews, Jemma Schnell, Miller Van Zambeek, Hannah Rajkumar, Amber Cook, Amie Haworth. The display is set up near Cotton On and No. 1 shoes and will be on for approximately two weeks. Be sure to head along and take a look!

Monday September 18th

There has been a lot of hard mahi taking place in term 3! Not only have Level 3 DVC (Design and Visual Communication) students been busy with their Practice/Derived Grade exams, but they have also been putting the final touches to their internal assessment (worth 6 credits) for their major Spatial Design projects. A range of 3-D models are presently on display in our school Auditorium foyer, offering a glimpse of what is on offer with a larger exhibition scheduled for later in the year.

During the year, L3DVC students have extensively explored the design process to creatively and clearly record the design development process of their chosen main project in detail, building upon the skills and knowledge they have learned in Level 1 and Level 2 to design and develop their own individual major project in the area of either spatial (architectural) design or product design.

It is great to see the work and attention to detail that students have been busily working towards. With Course Selection in the minds of our new Year 9 students (2024) it is timely to catch a glimpse of the amazing opportunities Green Bay High School has to offer.

Friday September 15th

Benji Godsmark (Year 10) has gone to infinity and beyond - having recently completed an intense curriculum in space exploration at the NASA Advanced Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama USA.

Held at the US Space and Rocket Center, Benji took part in aerospace technology, leadership, and team-building skills applicable to the nation's space and rocketry programmes.

Benji took part in practical astronaut training exercises, including M.A.T (Multi Access Training) to simulate re-entering into Earth's atmosphere. M.A.T tests astronauts to see how fast they can stabilise the capsule/pod as it returns to earth - ensuring astronauts are used to the conditions (and don't pass out)!

Scuba Diving can be daunting at the best of times - especially for the first time, however, this experience of weightlessness was all par for the course for Benji to feel what gravity is like in space.

Benji says one of the highlights of Space Camp was meeting Astronaut Dr. Lawrence "Larry" DeLucas, the former chief scientist of the International Space Station, who went up in the space shuttle Columbia before it was later involved in a fatal accident.

Now with his feet firmly back on the ground, Benji is looking forward to following a career path involving physics and space science and keeping in touch with friends and contacts with similar interests.

Putting her best foot forward on the campaign trail, and in the community: Green Bay High School's Annie-Rose Collins (Year 12) who was recently elected as Student Trustee (2024) on the Board of Trustees is a volunteer firefighter and medical first responder at Laingholm Fire Brigade. Earlier this week (11 September) Annie-Rose, with hundreds of other participants, ran up the Auckland Sky Tower stairwell in full firefighting kit - smashing it in a time of 16 minutes. Ka mau te wehi, Annie-Rose!

Monday September 11th

Mālō e lelei; Senior practice exams began this week and there has been an air of focus and determination across the school. For most Year 11 students, these practice exams will be their first experience of a formal exam setting and it has been great to see students well prepared, arriving on time and ready to sit their exams.

This week we had the annual election for the student representative on the Board of Trustees. I am so proud of the five students who stood for election and wanted to contribute their time and energy at Board level. Congratulations to Annie-Rose Collins who has been elected in this role, and thank you to Harrison Clark-Robinson for the fantastic job you have done over the past two years. We had a significantly higher student voting participation rate in this year's election, which was fantastic to see.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini – my strength is not as an individual, but as a collective

Thank you to whānau who came along to our Hui on Wednesday evening. We acknowledge your support as we work together to achieve great outcomes for our rangatahi. While sharing some great kai, we discussed our plans for next year, including Matariki and Te Ahi Kā, as well as the upcoming Derived Grade Exams.

Our next hui, to be held in Term 4 on Tuesday 21 November 2022 (tbc) will be focused on welcoming our incoming Year 8 students and their whānau during Orientation Days.

Last week's Winter tournament week brought an official end to the winter sports season, we would like to send a massive shout-out to all coaches and managers who helped our students get involved and compete throughout the season. Once again we had a record number of students competing for GBHS and a lot of this is down to our coaches and the time they give to the sports programme here at Green Bay High School. We appreciate YOU!

Student Trustee Election RESULTS: The election for this role was held on Wednesday 6 September 2023. The successful candidate was Annie-Rose Collins who got the majority of the vote. There was a huge turnout of student voters, which was evidence of the significant interest raised by the Campaign.

Congratulations to Annie-Rose who has been elected in this role and will serve as the Student Trustee on the Board in 2024. The Board looks forward to working with Annie-Rose.

The other Candidates were: Harrison Clark-Robinson, James MacDonald, Matakaea Tikao, and Olivia Tukia. They will provide Annie-Rose with any additional support that she may require throughout the rest of 2023 and into 2024. The Board would like to extend their thanks to Harrison Clark-Robinson for his contribution to the Board over the previous year.

All candidates carried out their campaign in a manner that reflected our school values and should be acknowledged as the excellent role models that they are. We thank them for their involvement in the democratic process of determining the Student Trustee.

Brilliant in its simplicity, eloquent in its humor, and with its roots firmly planted in grassroots Aotearoa. As rich, wacky, perceptive, touching, and outright hilarious as a Simpsons episode, yet Kiwi to its marrow. Wheeler's Luck is pure gold.

With no props and a cast size that can range from 2 - 52 - a flexibility beloved of all those who have to cater to variably sized and skilled groups - this extraordinary play was a classic from its triumphant opening night in 2004. Since then Wheeler's Luck has been performed to acclaim both professionally as the original two-hander, and in numerous local theatres and schools with an astounding range of cast sizes and production styles.

Based on the book Wheeler's Luck: A Rural Comedy by Nigel Collins, Toby Leach, Da'Mon Andrews, is energising, hilarious, and perceptive. This beautifully written play is pure theatrical magic. NZs beloved classic comedy Wheeler's Luck is a rollicking rural saga based around the citizens of a small community that life seems to have passed by - until, that is, the town mayor plots with an Auckland developer who has plans for an exclusive multi-million dollar resort - and not everyone is happy.

Monday September 4th

The NZ Secondary Schools Wrestling Champs were held at Rutherford College last week, on the 31st of August.

Over 90 students competed from high schools from all around the country. The highest number of athletes entered this year.

Alex Suddens (Year 11) represented Green Bay High School and placed 2nd in the Senior 60kg category. Well done, Alex!

Monday September 4th

Student Trustee Elections are taking place on Wednesday 6 September.

Student Trustee Candidates Harrison Carke-Robinson, Annie-Rose Collins, James MacDonald, Matakaea Tikao, and Olivia Tukia, who are standing for the position of Board of Trustees Student Trustee (2023/2024), held a Q&A session in the B block courtyard at lunchtime today (Friday 1 September) to help peers make an informed choice when placing their vote!

Voting will be conducted electronically. Electronic voting forms will be emailed out to students on Wednesday 6 September - voting closes at 4pm that day. All students are entitled to one vote.

The voting roll is held at the school office and can be viewed during normal school hours.
