Five new supermoons took place earlier this year, with three full supermoons still to come. #### FUN FACTS - What is a Supermoon? - A **new moon** occurs when the moon (in its monthly orbit of Earth) goes between the sun and Earth. - A **full moon** happens when the moon (in its monthly orbit) is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun. - A **perigee** is the moon’s closest point to Earth in a month. But what does all this mean, I hear you ask? Well, the 'new' or 'full' moon closely coincides with 'perigee' several times each year... and when that happens, voila, we have a 'supermoon'. The photograph shown above was taken by Zev through his telescope. What an amazing sight!
